After bagging the coveted title, the Russian president accused the United States of trying to undermine Russia to further its global dominance. The magazine, on Wednesday, awarded Putin his new title saying he returned Russia from chaos to the "table of world power". In an interview with Time magazine, Putin said Washington had adopted a strategy of belittling Russia to try to influence the country's domestic and foreign policy. "I believe ... this is a single-minded attempt to create a certain image of Russia which allows [Washington] to influence our internal and external policy," Putin said in the interview posted on the Kremlin's official site www.kremlin.ru. Russia: Measuring Influence, Emotions Aside

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 12/20/2007 10:55 AM Thursday, December 20, 2007 Russia: Measuring Influence, Emotions Aside By Peter Vail Putin Time magazine usable size (Public domain) "Time" has been choosing a "Person of the Year" -- formerly, a "Man of the Year" -- since 1927. That year, editors chose Charles Lindburgh, the pilot who made the first transatlantic flight. Since then, the magazine has noticeably tended to give the distinction to heads of state. For instance, only three U.S. presidents since 1927 have failed to earn the title. And foreign heads of state have been noted as well, including Soviet leaders Nikita Khrushchev, Yury Andropov, and Mikhail Gorbachev. (Gorbachev made the list twice.) So there is nothing, I think, surprising or extraordinary in the "Time" selection this year. That's one thing. Second, observers in Russia will naturally view the selection as an acknowledgment of Vladimir Putin's supreme services. And this is wrong. Again, we should look at the history of the matter and turn to the source. "Time" Managing Editor Richard ... >> full

After all, Putin completely dominates the political stage, and he could have easily initiated and passed any changes to the constitution needed for him to run for another term as president. Even his own oft-repeated assertions that he respects the letter and the spirit of the current constitution ring hollow, given such policies as the restriction of opposition political parties, limitations on ... >> full

But while the most prominent candidates have successfully filed their documents to the Central Election Commission, some liberal candidates are experiencing difficulties. The outcome of the vote would appear to be a foregone conclusion since First Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev received a powerful endorsement from incumbent Vladimir Putin. The country's ruling party, Unified Russia, likewise nominated Medvedev as their candidate on December 17 at a giant congress just a stone's throw from the Kremlin. President Putin used that televised occasion to announce his readiness to serve as prime minister if Medvedev becomes president. Medvedev's two main opponents are ... >> full

"They say that Putin is the most successful figure of the 20th century," academic Leonid Polyakov told a roundtable in September. "I would pose the issue more broadly: Who in history has been more successful than him? Who accumulated such a potential of confidence after being in power just eight years?" Or, as former First Deputy Duma Speaker Lyubov Sliska put it more succinctly in May: "Putin is our everything." The newsweekly's editors are careful to note that the distinction "is not and never has been an honor." "It is not an endorsement," they continue. "It is not a popularity contest. At its best, it is a clear-eyed recognition of the world as it ... >> full
