From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 12/20/2006 12:13 PM Russia Air Pollution Publication time: Today at 20:43 Djokhar time The extent of pollution and ecological collapse in Russia is due to decades of ill-considered military and industrial development undertaken in virtual secrecy and with scant concern for the environmental and health consequences. Environmental pollution clamps a stranglehold on the big cities in Russia. Pollution in Russia now threatens the health of millions of citizens and the safety of crops, water and air. In 84 of Russia's largest cities the air pollution is ten times the accepted safety levels. In some areas, especially among children, levels of respiratory problems are 50 per cent higher than the national average. Moreover, Russia is a major contributor to global ozone depletion, being the World's largest producers and consumers of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS). Thus, Russias emphasis on production at all costs has cost this country its environmental integrity. In the former Soviet Union, the government promoted production at all costs for decades. Why Russia Is Destroying Chechnya

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 12/22/2006 5:37 AM Why Russia Is Destroying Chechnya Publication time: 20 December 2006, 20:15 Russia's ruling elite finds incessant armed conflicts necessary for its own survival. Having claimed that the intervention in Chechnya is meant to "punish terrorism" and defend Russians from Chechen terrorist bombings, Yeltsin's government is unleashing another genocidal war against Chechnya and other Muslim parts of Russia. This perfectly illustrates the old Russian tradition of creating new problems, rather than solving existing ones. It also resembles the "Wag the Dog" scenario at least as much as US bombings of the Sudanese pharmaceutical plant on the eve of Monica Lewinsky's testimony. Bombings of apartment complexes in Moscow and other Russian cities conveniently distract public attention from the grim reality of corruption at the very top of the Russian hierarchy. In fact, there is little or no evidence linking any of the apartment bombings to "Chechen terrorists." General Aleksandr Lebed, one of the most popular candidates for the Russian presidency next year, believes ... >> full

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 12/26/2006 1:20 AM Russia has an image problem, and it's growing Publication time: Today at 12:08 Djokhar time Although its influence on the world stage is increasing, many in the West are wary of developments in Moscow The Kremlin made sure this year was the year the world finally took notice of Russia. But there was a hitch: Much of the world didn't like what it saw. In some ways, this year marked Russia's biggest breakthrough on the international stage since the trauma of the 1991 Soviet collapse. As the world's energy king -- the leading natural gas producer and second oil producer after Saudi Arabia -- Moscow now has a guaranteed seat at the international economic table where until just a few years ago Russian finance ministers went cap in hand. New diplomatic clout was on display in July when Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted world leaders from the powerful Group of Eight (G8) club in Saint Petersburg. Moscow paid off billions of dollars in ... >> full

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 12/26/2006 1:23 AM The Sensitive Issue of Russia Publication time: 25 December 2006, 17:45 Exclusive interview of "GULAG" web-site with Ahmad Sardali, the Chairman of The Political Council of the Movement for the Decolonization of Caucasus. Alexander Solzhenitsyn in his book "GULAG Archipelago" gave a brilliant characteristic of Chechen people: " ... a nation that did not submit to the psychology of obedience, - not loners, not rioters, but the nation as a whole. These are Chechens". Really, who ever have these people had to fight against for the independence - against Roman legionaries, against Chingys-khan, Baty-khan, Tamerlan. They had to struggle against Russian tsars for whom the entire colonization of Caucasus was inconceivable without conquering eternally intractable Chechnya, and against soviet leaders who continued the politics of tsar's Russia. Not unknown general Ermolov uttered ominous words in XIX century yet: "I will appease only providing that not any single Chechen stays alive". Why has Chechnya still remained the stumbling-block? What is the reason for secular ... >> full
