Even the Kremlin and the Duma know what good and bad is. They have democracy, as do we. They have a parliament, as do we. They fight against terrorism, as do we. They give out grants, and we will distribute. On 18 November, after a submission from United Russia, the Duma made amendments to the state budget for 2006. In particular, some 17.5 million dollars was allocated for “strengthening democracy and building a civic society”. The Duma’s deputy speaker, Vyacheslav Volodin, a member of United Russia, dreams of using this money first and foremost for protecting “citizens’ rights, their freedom, in places where the Russian population is insulted, in particular in the Baltic States”. How insulting! In particular for Chechens living in Chechnya, or for that matter throughout Russia. But this sum of money will hardly reach all the way to ... >> full

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 11/28/2005 12:47 AM MSNBC.com The Myth Of Stability Allies must have common goals and values. Putin's Russia shares neither. By Garry Kasparov Newsweek International Nov. 28, 2005 issue - If we were to sum up the conventional wisdom about Russia today, it would read something like this: The Putin government is less democratic than it could be, but Russia isn't ready for full democracy. The economy, while lagging, is improving. Instead of a cold-war enemy the West has an ally in the global war in terror. If he's a little heavy-handed on his own turf it's all in the name of security and stability. Unfortunately, that CW is as wrong today as it always seems to be about Russia. And it is not only an illusion but a dangerous one. The Russian people are ready for democracy—no less so than Iraqis. It's the Putin government that finds democracy unsuitable for its ends. The freedoms gained after the collapse of the U.S.S.R. have been steadily eroded ... >> full

A plane ticket becomes a luxury item for a common Russia citizen 11/22/2005 17:03 Too many cooks spoil the broth Officials of the Russian aviation industry and many directors of Russian airlines have been proud with the unexampled 20 and 30-percent increase in air transportation in the country. The situation has changed for the worse recently, though. Valery Okulov, the Director of Russia's largest airline, Aeroflot, stated during the recent conference devoted to current problems of the home aviation industry that the market was declining because of the ongoing growth of prices on aviation fuel (they increased by 60 percent vs. 2004). November, 29, 2005 Washington - Moscow: wars in exchange for... Democracy? When in black September 1999 in Russia, as if on a fatal chain, houses with peacefully sleeping people were blown up, I remember, I was engulfed with a presentiment: they will start with "final decisions of Chechen question", and will finish "final decision of democratic question in Russia". But that time still the hope was glimmering: the West will not allow neither that, nor another. And that, what for the meaning of the life of the West after the Second World War was "cold war", what for reformer M.S.Gorbachev was enthusiastically met, what for so much hopes were submitted to the Soviet dissidents? I remember, the candidate in presidents of USA George Bush-junior in 1999 - declared in pre-election debate 2000: "no cent to the Russian government, until it stops the Chechen massacre and returns to democratic reforms". Nevertheless, after fatal September, 11 Bush so trusted in the president of Russia that he did not notice where his ... >> full
