Anu Lenkvist: book "The Colour of War" shows the war in Chechnya by eyes of Russian soldiers

Nov 18 2010, 23:00

People in Finland known little about what is happening in Chechnya; and the book by Arkadi Babchenko, a journalist and a veteran of the Chechen warfare, "The Colour of War" fills the gap in knowledge, said Anu Lenkvist, translator of the book into Finnish. The interests of residents of Finland to the conflict in Northern Caucasus as a whole is great, says rights defender Oksana Chelysheva.

Oksana Chelysheva, a human rights defender, a journalist and deputy head of the Finnish organization "Society for Russian-Chechen Friendship", who was also present at presentation of the book in Helsinki, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the interest in Finland residents to books of the authors writing about the war is very great, especially of those who write about the war in Northern Caucasus.

"The Finns themselves have noted that the publication of this book in the Finnish language is a reason for the Finnish ...

RFE/RL: Former Georgian President Speaks Out

Former Georgian President Speaks Out

Eduard Shevardnadze

Eduard Shevardnadze

Last updated (GMT/UTC): 10.11.2010 12:48
* Correction appended

For several years after his ouster in Georgia's November 2003 Rose Revolution, Eduard Shevardnadze lived quietly outside Tbilisi and rarely spoke to the press. But over the past year he has spoken out with increasing frequency, not only criticizing the present Georgian leadership but candidly admitting to his own grave errors of judgment.

Most of Shevardnadze's more interesting comments have been published in five interviews over the past three months with the newspaper "Asaval-Dasavali" (Whereabouts), highlights from which were circulated by Caucasus Press.

He set the tone in the first of those interviews, on August 16, in which he claimed that no truly free and fair elections have been held in Georgia "for a long time." It has been argued that the "cleanest" elections in Georgia since 1992 were the simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections in November 1995, when Shevardnadze was first elected president.

In no fewer than three ...

RFE/RL: End Of Part 1

Will gruesome footage of the cold-blooded killings by Islamic insurgents lead to mass resignations from the local police?

Will gruesome footage of the cold-blooded killings by Islamic insurgents lead to mass resignations from the local police?

November 08, 2010
The two high-profile attacks by Chechen suicide bombers in late August and mid-October have eclipsed the more frequent, and more deadly attacks committed almost on a daily basis by Islamic insurgents in Kabardino-Balkaria.

Chilling footage of two of those attacks, and of the execution-style killings of two Interior Ministry personnel and two other men, has just been posted on one of the insurgency websites "with the very best wishes from your brothers of the Kabardino-Balkar-Karachai jamaat." Comments posted to the website range from "we have not seen anything like this before" to expressions of ecstatic approval. There has been no explicit condemnation of the executions.

The nine-minute video clip is titled "Operations by the mujahedin of the Kabardino-Balkar-Karachai jamaat. Part 1." The montage is highly professional. Images of a police vehicle being blown up by a remote-controlled bomb ...

RFE President Gedmin Awarded Honorary Doctorate By Tbilisi State University

Georgia -- Gedmin speaking at Tbilisi State University

October 07, 2010
(Tbilisi, Georgia) In remarks made at Tbilisi State University today, RFE President Jeffrey Gedmin told an audience of 200 students and faculty that "there can be no freedom without free media. A free press is critical to the evolution of democracy."

Gedmin spoke at a ceremony at the oldest institution of higher education in the Caucasus, where he was awarded an honorary doctorate.

In his acceptance remarks, Gedmin spoke about the challenges of building a vibrant democracy. He discussed the crucial role played by a free press and RFE's historic contributions to Georgian civil society.

Gedmin also highlighted RFE's newest initiative in the region, Ekho Kavkaza, a Russian-language news service to the Georgian breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Recipients of the honorary doctorate from Georgia's national university have included U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz, U.S. national security advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski, Estonian President Toomas Ilves, and UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali.

During the three day ...
