Security Council to check information about Dymovskiy's links with foreigners

nov 11 2009, 23:40

Yuri Baluevskiy, deputy secretary of the Security Council, said today that the version of involvement of NGOs, foreign ones inclusive, in the activities of Militia Major Alexei Dymovskiy is not confirmed and needs a further check.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that earlier a certain source from the Department of Internal Security (DIS) of Russia's MIA said that the Major's public statements are backed up by NGOs, financed from abroad, in particular, the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

Mr Baluevskiy has noted that in his criticism of militia bosses "somewhere in something, maybe, Dymovskiy was right." According to his version, it is not yet worth making hasty conclusions that some "other-worldly forces" stand behind Major's words, as the "Gazeta.Ru" reports.

Meanwhile, it became known that Dymovskiy told the workers of the prosecutor's office of the Krasnodar Territory about a number of violations in law enforcement bodies, which he had not mentioned earlier.

The "Novaya Gazeta" writes ...

Forbes: Igor Sechin: The Kremlin's Oil Man

The World's Most Powerful People
Igor Sechin: The Kremlin's Oil Man
Heidi Brown, 11.11.09, 6:00 PM ET

He's been depicted as Darth Vader in the Russian press and described as "the scariest person on Earth." Igor Sechin's official title is deputy prime minister, but within Russia, many consider him the most powerful individual in the country after Vladimir Putin. (Yes--that means he's more influential than the president.)

Sechin, who oversees the country's abundant natural resources, reigns over the storied Kremlin faction known as the siloviki--roughly, "powerful ones"--which includes the military and intelligence services. These men believe the state should control access to natural resources, and were against the appointment of Dmitry Medvedev to the presidency. An increasingly vocal cadre of pro-Medvedev cabinet ministers, some reform-minded, have made moves to quell the influence of the siloviki. But Sechin has, so far, kept his grip on power.

There is little solid information about the man. Like many of Putin's cronies, Sechin is a St. Petersburg native. In the 1990s he worked in city government. ...

Those Who Did Stalin's Dirty Work

November 9, 2009: Iranian officials are threatening Russia with retaliation (fewer orders for military and civilian goods, no contracts to develop Iranian oil fields), if the S300 anti-aircraft missiles ordered two years ago, were not delivered. Russia has delayed delivery because of protests from the U.S., Israel and other Western nations. It's believed that the S300 would make it more difficult to punish Iran if Iran caused a lot of trouble (closing the entrance to the Persian Gulf or attacking one of its neighbors.) Russia has been convinced that Iran is more of a threat than an opportunity.

The government is making another attempt to reduce alcoholism. Russians drink a lot, about twice as much as Americans, and about fifty percent more than Western Europeans. Alcohol consumption has tripled since the end of the Cold War, although most of the additional booze has been beer or wine. But there are over two million alcoholics, and alcohol related diseases are a major ...

Russia switching vector of interest to Asia - analyst

                                       Part-I

The Kremlin considers Europe less dangerous than USA. Although Russia, contested by Europe, claims to a European state, it is also a part of Asia and hence very much in Asia-Pacific region. For global status and economic and military ties, Russia has been keen to be with EU. Russo-Europe relations are represented in many forums, most important are EU, NATO and OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe). Earlier, Russia had better relationship with EU than NATO which fought fiercely against. Today, Moscow relationships with both are badly strained.

With the collapse of the Soviet Union, its triumphant enemy, NATO, and the European Union both swept across Europe, taking in a dozen new members in a great arc through former-Communist territory. But at the same time, EU states boosted trade ties with Russia in ...

Russia Needs a Nationalities Ministry to Prevent Assimilation, Eurasian Group Says
By: Paul Goble
Window on Eurasia, October 28, 2009

Vienna, October 27 – In order to stop the nations of Russia from "disappearing quietly and without notice," the Russian section of the International Movement for the Defense of the Rights of Peoples has called for the creation of an ombudsman to defend these groups and also the re-establishment of a ministry for nationality affairs.
At a meeting this week in Volgograd, Pavel Zarifullin, the coordinator of this group, said that "every day another people disappears from the face of the earth" and that in the Russian Federation, "the russification of all peoples is taking place so strongly" that in two or three generations, even the Tatars will not exist (geopolitica.ru/Articles/788/).
But this process, which reflects the forces of globalization, is affecting not only relatively smaller groups but also large peoples like the Russians, Zarifullin suggested. And if nothing is down, then "in place of the rich diversity of ...
