Report: Women Face Rampant Abuse in Russia
By Alexandra Odynova The St. Petersburg Times MOSCOW — Thousands of women in Russia are subject to violence, including sexual abuse, domestic violence, human trafficking and crimes related to national traditions, according to a report released Wednesday. Every hour, a Russian woman is killed by her husband or partner, while a woman is sexually abused every 30 minutes, the report said. The study was prepared by the Anna Center, which works to prevent violence against women, and released to coincide with the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women. “Violence against women remains a big problem, but it receives little attention,” Marina Pisklakova-Parker, the center’s director, said during the report’s presentation. The Syostry, or Sisters, call center, which helps victims of sexual abuse, received 3,534 calls in Moscow last year. “There is no state support for victims during the first moments after an act of violence. Instead, women are interrogated for an investigation,” said Alexei Parshin, a lawyer who handles sexual abuse cases. Law ... >> full

Archil Gegeshidze: I do not foresee lasting Russian presence in our region Sat 21 November 2009 | 07:56 GMT Text size: 3811 Archil Gegeshidze News.Az interviews Amb. Archil Gegeshidze, Senior Fellow of Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies. How can you assess the established geopolitical situation in the South Caucasus region? The situation is undesirable and there are still too many division lines. We are yet too far from integration. A small territory has so many lines, so many walls both inside Georgia and the region – between you and Armenia. This is not favorable for our countries that are at the start of their development. Certainly, some has more resources, others less, but they are not enough for independent development without cooperating with other countries in the region. Our location made us mutually dependent which causes the need for our economic and other interaction. Thus, the current situation does not promote the peaceful and rapid development of our region. If once we manage to jump over our head and ... >> full

The Moscow Times: Promises, Promises

Promises, Promises 12 November 2009 By Nikolai Zlobin During his perfunctory election campaign, President Dmitry Medvedev made no mention of the need to modernize Russia, nor did he promise to become a popular video blogger or to set any world records for compassion by providing apartments to World War II veterans. No, Medvedev called for a battle against corruption and promised to do so much in establishing law and order that everyone would understand that he was not just keeping the presidential seat warm until Prime Minister Vladimir Putin returned to it in 2012. Russians — tired of small-scale corruption that has become a way of life and daily injustice on the part of government officials — were ready to believe the anti-corruption pluck of the young leader who promised to “finally put an end” to the problem. However, Medvedev’s call to battle corruption has gone unheeded. All surveys, statistics and personal observations indicate that, during Medvedev’s 18 months in office, corruption has actually increased. Now the question is: Will ... >> full

Politkovskaya expected death: new film by Carole Landry – Thu Nov 19 PARIS (AFP) – Two years before she was killed in the stairwell of her Moscow apartment, Anna Politkovskaya mused about life as the Kremlin's number one enemy and pronounced it a "miracle" that she was still alive. The journalist, lauded for her fearless reporting of Russian atrocities in Chechnya, made the comment during the interviews that make up the moving documentary film "Lettre a Anna" (Letter to Anna) released this week in France. The letter of the title is written by Swiss filmmaker Eric Bergkraut who had recorded four in-depth interviews with Politkovskaya for another film on Russia when she was murdered on October 7, 2006. He quickly decided to shift focus and the result is a 75-minute documentary featuring Politkovskaya as well as conversations with her grieving family and colleagues at the Novaya
Gazeta newspaper where she worked. "Why am I still alive? I think it's probably a miracle," she says in a haunting interview filmed in Geneva ... >> full

Alexander Litvinenko 1962 - 2006
My friend Alexander (Sasha) Litvinenko saw during the nineties how the
KGB and its successor the FSB descended into corruption, organized crime
and the liquidation of opponents. Sasha was a whistle blower and he sang
out. It caused him all sorts of trouble and when his life was at risk he
defected to Britain in 2000 where he got asylum and British citizenship.
>From his base in London he accused the Kremlin leadership of being a
"gangster regime" and the FSB an instrument to terrorize the Russian
people, suppress democracy and protect power for the elite by force. In
particular he accused the FSB of having been behind the bombings of the
apartment blocks in Russia in September 1999 when almost 300 innocent
Russians where killed. The purpose of these perpetrations, ... >> full
