Some sources had earlier claimed that the guerrillas were fighting to establish a Caliphate from the Caspian to the Black Sea. It can now be said that by a single decision of the Ichkerian President, the cause of Chechen independence has been buried – the cause that initiated a struggle during which the republic has lost hundreds of thousands of people. Now the members of the resistance movement are truly on their own, having cut themselves off from the judicial support of some circles in Europe. Akhmed Zakayev recently issued a warning that certain forces, working in conjunction with the FSB, were preparing a project named "Caucasus Emirate". He said he was convinced that behind ... >> full

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 11/4/2007 2:43 AM From The Sunday Times November 4, 2007 One Soldier's War in Chechnya by Arkady Babchenko Reviewed by Max Hastings All wars are hell, but some hells are worse than others. If Arkady Babchenko is to be believed, Russian conscripts fighting their country’s long, shambolic war in Chechnya suffered more at the hands of their own people than those of the enemy. Almost daily, young soldiers were sadistically beaten by veterans. Everything not screwed down, including arms and ammunition, was sold in the marketplace, often to the Chechen separatists the army was supposed to be fighting. Officers were at best bunglers, at worst monsters. Almost everyone was drunk, nearly all the time. “The first time I really got beaten up was on May 9. Victory Day,” recounts the author, a law-school graduate who went to Chechnya in 1996, aged 18. “The reconnaissance boys kicked us out of our beds and beat us the whole night. Towards morning they got tired of that and ... >> full

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 11/5/2007 12:11 AM Caucasus Emirate is coming from Kremlin Mayirbek Taramov It is not difficult to see who prepared the speech of President Dokka Umarov; they exactly copied down the Kremlin’s strategic program with a difference—they used an Islamic terminology. “O mighty king, The sovereign Shah Ismail! We haven’t known the enemy yet, Teach us to discern him. We are handling the sword the wrong way, And it then slashes us.” Poet Mamed Araz The announcement of Ichkerian claims that the North Caucasian emirate or caliphate should be established brings immediately it to mind that this keeps being repeated by our enemies as well: Putin, Patrushev and the almost entire Russian administration, let alone different types of puppets. How can we possibly explain that the two sides, both at war, share very common interests? We will tell the truth in the specific language that it uses, leaving aside sentiments, in order both to demonstrate the seriousness of the question at hand and to do away with ... >> full

'Caucasus Emirate' – where is the beef?

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 11/8/2007 12:02 PM 'Caucasus Emirate' – where is the beef? Publication time: 7 November 2007, 17:48 The recent debate over the "Caucasus Emirate" has been very confusing for most people monitoring the situation in Chechnya. We have read declarations signed by many prominent persons, there have been a lot of rumors and accusations published by various web sites, and the leadership of President Umarov has not only been questioned but also denied by high officials. Still we lack one ingredient of intellectual debate - despite wordy statements we have got hardly any evidence or proofs testifying accusations of abuse of power. The Constitution of ChRI has been a weapon in the debate, but nobody seems to define what articles have been violated or what articles would justify their own planned actions. To some extent it looks like a number of Mischief Makers has captured the stage, showing us a theatrical performance with quite few artistic merits. Maybe it's time to search and unearth the facts, ... >> full
