Russia: EU Making Its Voice Heard In Moscow's Backyard

By Brian Whitmore

Russia -- President Vladimir Putin (L) and German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Sochi, 21Jan2007
(ITAR-TASS)
October 12, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin has been hearing some strange sounds coming from Berlin and Paris lately.

On the eve of his visit to Moscow this week, French President Nicolas Sarkozy accused Russia of "brutality" in relations with its neighbors and reminded Putin that being a great power also carries serious responsibilities. It was a verbal broadside reminiscent of the public scolding German Chancellor Angela Merkel gave Putin back in May over the treatment of opposition protesters when she visited the Russian city of Samara.

Stern reprimands like these are a far cry from the warm and fuzzy chats Putin was accustomed to with the previous leaders of Germany and France, Gerhard Schroeder and Jacques Chirac.

"We have recently had political change. In Germany first, and now in France," says ...

BBC NEWS
Rice attacks Kremlin's power grip
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has voiced concern about Russia's direction by saying too much power is concentrated within the Kremlin.

Her comments, made during a visit to Moscow, will be seen as a thinly veiled criticism of President Vladimir Putin.

Earlier she met human rights activists and said she wanted to help them build institutions to protect people from the "arbitrary power of the state".

But she also said she had no wish to interfere in Russia's internal affairs.

She and US Defence Secretary Robert Gates are in Moscow for talks on US plans to base a missile shield in Eastern Europe - which Russia opposes.

Washington has so far been cautious about criticising the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin on democracy.

But the BBC's Rupert Wingfield-Hayes in Moscow says this is rapidly becoming another issue to add to the long list of those that divide Russia and ...

A Hidden War Within Russia’s Security Agencies

A Hidden War Within Russia’s Security Agencies

There is a war brewing among the high ranking officials of Russia’s secret services. Unattended by Parliamentary oversight or responsibility to anyone but the president, major security agencies, including the FSB, the FSKN (the Federal Narcotics Control Service), and the Office of the Prosecutor, are fighting amongst themselves for greater powers.

The latest scandal is the arrest of four FSKN officials, including Lt. General Alexander Bulbov, by the FSB. On October 1st, the officers were detained, and held on charges of corruption and leaking secrets. The lack of any transparency in the security sector makes it impossible to guess what other personal battles have been waged in recent months.

In a public and lucid article published shortly thereafter in Kommersant, Viktor Cherkesov, the head of the FSKN, called for peace among the agencies. “A ‘war of all on all’ will result in a complete disintegration of the network,” he wrote. “We ...

Inflation Jumps to Double Digits

Inflation Jumps to Double Digits
On October 5th, the Russian Statistics Committee (Rosstat) dropped a bombshell announcement. According to the organization, inflation rose eight times higher in September 2007 as the same month last year, at .8% instead of .1%. These figures largely undermine the stable rate of inflation of past years, and mark the first time that the inflation rate has dramatically increased since 1998. Economic analysts predict that the rate will continue crawling upward, and have dismissed previous assessments of the inflation as overly optimistic.
The rise was felt sharpest by ordinary consumers, who found rate hikes of up to 30 % on such basic necessities as milk, bread and cheese. Rosstat reported that 89 % of food products became more expensive in September, although costs rose across most other sectors as well. A survey led by the Interfax news agency found that 64% of respondents now cannot afford some daily food products because they ...
