The United States on Monday strongly urged Russia and Georgia to "lower the rhetoric" after a spying furor and offered Washington's help to resolve long-standing conflicts such as in South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Dan Fried said he hoped both sides would try to reduce tensions following the release of the "soldiers" and he urged Russia to lift restrictions, which include a ban on imports of Georgian wine and bottled water.
"This is a moment, we hope, with the Russians returned, for Russia and Georgia to step back, lower the rhetoric and hopefully work together," Fried told reporters.
He added: "Hot rhetoric, sanctions, threats, all kinds of provocative behavior don't help.", Reuters reports.

Switzerland tops the list as the country where bribes are least likely to be used to help sell goods and services on foreign export markets, followed by Sweden. At the "bad boys" end of the Transparency International list stand China, Russia, Turkey, and India -- all rapidly growing economies -- in some cases already powerhouses of the global economy. An 'Alarming' Situation Marie Wolkers is the senior research coordinator at Transparency, an independent Berlin-based organization campaigning against corruption. She says it's "alarming" to find companies in such important trading nations so willing to offer bribes. The bribe-payers index is based on responses ... >> full

The battle cries claim that all is at stake and every strike is a final defense of freedom and stability. But the premise behind this thinking has become all too obvious. Arabs and Muslims of whatever race or hue are not to be trusted. They are not to be dealt with fairly and the "liberal values" that protect the righteous of Israel or the United States are not for our defense or our protection. It seems that even the moderates in Arab societies lack the fiber that would grant them equality under international law. We are all as one, barbarians at the gate to be cowed and bullied into silent submission. But we should be thankful that Arab moderation fights on with stoicism. Moderation will ... >> full

“Just think about it for a minute: If you’re sitting in the forest with a machine gun and have two-dozen relatives of a police colonel you wasted looking to avenge his blood, and your own desire for revenge against two dozen relatives of the cop who killed your brother, would you really put much stake in an offer of amnesty for the innocent?” -- Columnist Yulia Latynina on the federal amnesty offer to rebels in the North Caucasus, Moscow Times, August 16.
