By Liz Fuller, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty 14 October 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Although many details of the 13 October multiple attacks in Nalchik, capital of the Kabardino-Balkaria Republic, remain unclear, and estimates of the number of militants who participated, and of those captured or killed, diverge significantly, the militants do not appear to have scored a military victory in the classic sense of the word. While they succeeded in sowing chaos and terror, the losses they inflicted may prove to be numerically smaller than in any single large-scale action undertaken by the Chechen resistance since 1995. The decision to launch a near simultaneous attack on multiple targets -- 20, according to the Institute of War and Peace Reporting (IWPR), including the Federal Security Service (FSB), the antiterrorism unit, the Interior Ministry's central offices, the corrections department directorate, three police stations, the city airport, and a gun shop ... >> full

But their efforts are proving increasingly counterproductive: On the one hand, their focus on Wahhabism has meant that the police there have failed to prevent a dramatic rise in ordinary crime. And on the other hand, the brutality and heavy-handedness of their attacks on this form of Islam has divided local society and radicalized ever more Muslims. Indeed, the situation has deteriorated to the point in Kabardino-Balkaria that 400 local Muslims have appealed to President Vladimir Putin for permission to ... >> full

By Maxim Kononenko One day, Vladimir Vladimirovich™ Putin was sitting in his Kremlin office issuing urgent orders over the telephone. "Anyone who doesn't surrender should be eliminated on the spot!" Vladimir Vladimirovich™ barked into the phone. "Seal off the city with a tightly controlled cordon! Do it!" Vladimir Vladimirovich™ slammed down the phone. At that very moment, the tall doors of the presidential office swung open and the deputy head of the presidential administration, Vladislav Yuryevich Surkov, entered in a hurry. "Hey, pal," Vladislav Yuryeivich said anxiously. "They killed Basayev again." "You're kidding me!" Vladimir Vladimirovich™ exclaimed. He jumped out of his presidential armchair, rushed over to the wall and opened a small door. Vladimir Vladimirovich™ ran his hand along the inside of the door frame until he felt the light switch, flipped it and stepped into a small room bathed in an uneven yellow light. Vladislav Yuryevich hurried ... >> full

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 10/17/2005 5:57 PM 17.10.2005 20:46 MSK Wrong diagnosis – wrong treatment In connection with the latest act of terror, this time in the town of Nalchik, the Chechen Committee of National Salvation has declared that “Terrorist attacks in Russia are inevitable until the war in Chechnya is concluded. It would be high time to finally achieve this!” Unfortunately, our gloomy prognosis continues to hold true. And do believe that we are not gloating about this. We would not like to have to say every time, “We told you so”. What place does gloating have when the lives of innocent victims are at stake, whoever they may be or wherever they live? Who but the peaceful citizens of Chechnya have had to endure the terror of Russian forces – open to them; veiled to the rest of the world – for the last eleven years? Where have mothers shed so many tears that a sea could be formed with them? How should people behave: the ones who ... >> full
