Johnny Depp to produce film on Litvinenko poisoning: report
January 13, 2007

LOS ANGELES - Hollywood heart-throb Johnny Depp is to produce a movie about the mysterious poisoning death of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko, it was reported here Friday.

Movie industry daily Variety reported that rights to a book about Litvinenko's death in London last year have been scooped up by studio giant Warner Bros for Depp's production company to develop.

Depp, the star of "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", has been following the Litvinenko intrigue closely and could end up starring in the film, the report said.

Actor John Malkovich is also being lined up to star in a second movie, based on a book co-authored by Litvinenko, "Blowing Up Russia", the British Independent newspaper reported Saturday.

The book argues that Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) -- a successor to the KGB -- coordinated blasts in Moscow and other Russian cities in 1999 which killed more than 300 people.

The Russian government used the blasts to argue for a renewed offensive against Chechnya, and public support for the war helped propel then prime minister Vladimir Putin into the presidency.

Meanwhile, publishers Simon And Schuster have signed up Litvinenko's widow Marina and Alex Goldfarb, a friend who became the family's spokesman during his illness, to write a book about the Litvinenko killing, the Independent said.

Another book on the death is to be written by Alan Cowell, a journalist at The New York Times, Variety reported.

Litvinenko, an outspoken Kremlin critic, died in a London hospital in November from radiation poisoning after apparently accusing Putin of involvement in his murder.

Police in Britain and Russia are investigating the death.
