A letter of Nadezhda Banchik to the “Chechenpress”
Dear employees of the “Chechenpress” ! Thank you for that you do not let me and many other adherents die of asthma – with your extreme courage in such an unequal fight. Believe, everyone, who is in the slightest degree concerned with the destiny of your people, the Caucasus , Russia , and the world, sympathize with you. But all of us need to experience bitterly only our own powerlessness and impossibility to stop the fanatic genocide, very similar to which Jews have gone through.
It is even more terrible, that freedom of speech turns into freedom of versions, 99 % of which are the tendentious propagation of those or other interests complicating revealing of the true and it also confuses the insufficiently uninitiated. In fact TACTICALLY Americans do almost the same in Iraq, what Russian gangs do in the ChRI , but STRATEGICALLY Iraq will soon differ from Russia the same as during Soviet time the Western Germany differed from the East one.
And consequently, when I try to mention the Chechen-Russian questions, I face thousands of "buts"... The most terrible thing is impossibility to find though any constructive way out from this geopolitical precipice formed in the Caucasus because of worthless and short-sighted policy of the "world powers" and, first of all, of certain forces in America – I can see it from within!
Anyway, the time will come, when all fair people understand, from what evil and barbarity you have saved the West by means of extreme sufferings. It seems, Chechens have got the historical task - to constrain the new "Mongolian" invasion into the world, which this time has come under the mask of "terrorism" and consisting, basically, of, generally speaking, Russian mafia, disappointed with unsuccessful "perestroika" and obsessed with revenge.
As it seems to me, we, living in the West, should convince the politicians and independently working people somehow. I shall share with you my reflections on 9 years of residing in the USA .
First, you can do nothing here with knowledge of the Russian language, and English and any another language is comprehended for minimum a year for elementary dialogue. Minimum 3 – 4 years are necessary for activity. It is even at presence “English as a foreign language”, learnt at a Soviet school.
Second, it is IMPOSSIBLE to begin anything without money here; nobody will talk seriously to you. And it is extremely difficult to save money for such an activity (informational, humanitarian, political) for Chechens, especially when Americans are concerned with the war of their own citizens and they mobilize all forces first of all for actions against the Iraq war, then against big and small wars in the sphere of influence of America in the world, and the Chechen one is, as we used to say, is a “residual principle”. I try to strengthen with them, basically - with democrats, liberals, anti-war people some kind of cooperation against the support of Bush to Putin based on “trade with wars”. The successes are scanty. But these people, at least, are adjusted for sympathy and compassion, and in any degree it opens them the way.
Thirdly, Chechenia has been betrayed (because of their own short-sightedness) by those influential circles, which earlier managed the cold war and on which Bush, actually, relied, when he came to power in 2000. These circles turned abruptly to the East after September, 11. For some reason they have not found anything the best, than to replace the race of nuclear arms (which, actually, has not disappeared anywhere, but only has concealed “under water”) with such a terrible game “cat-and-mouse” with present updating of the Russian security officerism .
All fair people, former Soviet dissidents, intelligentsia, who still remember rendering of support to Sakharov , are horrified with it, but do not undertake anything against it. Even such people, like Bzhezinski, ALMOST decide nothing (if they did not solve ABSOLUTELY nothing, Chechens would have the same destiny like Jews at Hitler , and America would be already covered with a black shadow of the Russian mafia).
And the new generation of American politicians, going to change "the hawks of the cold war”, understands NOTHING, absolutely nothing in Russian affairs. At the best, they have read Dostoevsky in translation. (I have become convinced with my own attempts to appeal to them).
Fourthly, many Chechens overstrain here at any work to send money to their relatives and friends.
Believe, I, living here, even more, than you, am despaired because of the western treachery. But I have analyzed, of what this treachery consist and with what it is caused. And I share it with you. For, having dug out the probable reasons, it becomes easier to operate. Anyway, it seems to me, America will reform sooner, than Russia ; there has already been such a precedent – in 60th years. Then all people revolted against all injustices taken together, including the war in Vietnam . And if now the situation is driven to the social protest, it will instantly be thrown to Russia . This is what I think about it. So it seems to me, one of the possible ways out is a more active search of cooperation with the western anti-war organizations.
It by no means excludes my support of the right of Chechens for self-defense and protection of their tormented Native land. But it is not enough. It is necessary to participate more actively in attempts of geopolitical reorganization, and it cannot be achieved, if to refuse the international cooperation absolutely. And, as it seems to me, President Sadulaev also should take it into account, as well as to take into consideration of the extreme difficulties for the political work of the Chechen Diaspora.
