Outer signs of lasting peace

Outer signs of lasting peace

Ramzan Kadyrov promised to fulfil a number of tasks by May 9: to finish with Basayev and to name the assassins of his father. However, instead of a solemn report about the job done by May 9, two days later “first vice premier” made a vague and hollow statement: “The rebels pose no serious threat to security in the republic and can organize small raids only… If previously there were thousands of members of illegal armed formations, now there are only dozens of them.”

We can easily guess what forced Kadyrov to make such victorious reports and why he kept silence for two days, speaking out only on May 11. According to mass media reports, on May 9 fighters of the Chechen Resistance attacked the native village of Kadyrov (which looks today more like a fortress). Clearly enough, the attacked were scattered and pursued. “Chief of the Kurchaloy district department of interior” Roman Edilov reported about “8 killed rebels” and alleged they belonged to “the gangs of Avdorkhanov and Khalilov.” In other words – nothing new.

Another passage by Edilov caused surprise: “Supposedly there were several dozens of rebels. Under the cover of night they, probably, disappeared in a forest. Usually about 40-50 rebels take part in such attacks.” As we see even the police chief does not know the number of the attackers and where they hid.

What kind of “pursuit of rebels” is meant? And what is this – several dozens? Kadyrov also alleged the total number of rebels is – several “dozens.” If that is the case, the rebels who attacked his fortress on May 9 are the last rebels remaining alive.

That means on May 9 the republic celebrated V-Day in peace, and the thousands-strong grouping of federal forces, including OMONs, special troops, defense ministry troops, GRU, pro-Moscow police, etc., must have relaxed instead of staying on alert. We shall mention additional roadblocks across the republic and traffic limits – these are common signs of all holidays in the republic.

Trusting Kadyrov is stupid for a simple reason: there is no direct or indirect proof of his words about small broken rebel groups, and being an interested party “the vice premier” is not trustworthy. But such barefaced lie is the only thing Kadyrov can allow in today’s situation. In fact, today he has remained the only source of false, but positive information from Chechnya. His reports about a complete victory and a normalization which is underway is the number 1 news republished almost by all Russian state-run mass media.

However, other information of recent events in Chechnya, about attacks at roadblocks and dispositions of federal troops, judging by which we can make a conclusion about increased activity of the Resistance, can be found on rare occasions in electronic mass media. All that is due to the Russian censorship.

Russian TV channels are full of positive information. As an endless soap opera, we daily see Vladimir Putin talking to one or another state official. Putin listens to them with a concerned face, “carefully considering all the details as Lenin” and give “brilliant orders” on the spot – the whole staff of ministerial employees could have never thought about them. Taking into account such information policy, Ramzan Kadyrov has no right to be a source of bad news from Chechnya. That’s why “the vice premier” tells lies trying to work off his post and awards to Putin.

It is much better to find out about today’s situation in Chechnya from reports and information bulletins of human rights organizations. The reality is as follows: yesterday, not far from the Chechen village of Novye Atagi, a Russian APC, which moved within a military column, “suddenly” crushed a civilian vehicle. As a result a 14-year old girl died. Three people were injured. According to doctors, their situation is very serious. Representatives of the military prosecutor’s office arrived at the accident scene … 7 hours later after local residents blocked the road. We can hardly believe it was an incident: such accidents are quite common for Chechnya, and all witnesses of such road accidents (who managed to survive) unambiguously say Russian troops did it deliberately. So, only the absence of roadblocks and Russian military armor on Chechen roads can be considered as outer signs of “lasting peace” which has already set in in the republic.
