NatPress: Maykop Town Day’s Celebrations Were Grandiose

Maykop town day’s celebrations were grandiose
13.9.2009

Since the morning till late the night in the center of Adygeya capital it was hard to force the way. Maykop had not seen such a mass, grandiose celebrating, perhaps, in the whole newest history. And that in the view of that in the last year the town day celebrating practically did not take place.

The whole day long a fair proceeded. Only in some places on Lenin's square there were attractions, competitions and other actions with actors’ participation, with rest space was occupied by counters, stands, etc., that is everything that advertised or directly represented these or those goods.

The prices were not so low, the goods were shown quite ordinary, basically of the local production, and, nevertheless, at each counter a turn, if not a crowd formed. It would be rather silly to expect from the sellers to low prices at such fantastic crowds. But people seemed to buy all successively and looked rather happy.

The holiday was good, probably, for the several reasons. But, probably, we should consider as the main only two reasons. The first is what was mentioned above, and what opened the road to the holiday as a whole.

Let's remember, in 2007-2008 there had not celebrating because Adygeyan public organizations opposed celebrating the date of the 150th anniversary of foundation (1857) of a Russian fortress at the place. In 2010 Maykop will be 3200, they declared, and that date is true.

In the beginning of this year during the public hearings under the town charter that question was sounded again. Till the middle of the summer the mention of the foundation of the town disappeared from the charter, and the celebrating of the Day of the town was stated for September. And that was a conciliatory proposal.

The present celebrating proved that if earlier - till 2007 – Adygs had ignored celebrating of Maykop Day, in the present celebrations they really participated. However, not as the hosts of the holiday, and as visitors.

The evening concert appeared the culmination of the holiday. The stage (fixed on Lenin's square) was shared by the Moscow artists - group "Roots" - and singer Natasha Koroleva.

The concert was anticipated with congratulation of the 12newly-married coupled - (whether according to 12 months of year, whether - 12 stars on Adygeyan flag). But we shall say, there were no Adygeyan couple among them, only international ones though at the Registry office on that day an Adygeyan wedding was performed.

During the show the leader asked participants of one of the competitions invited to the stage, what means the name "Maykop" in translation. The answer was: “the apple-trees valley”. That, perhaps, was a unique mentioning about Adygs during the evening concert.

The second reason, because of which the holiday was right, is a little bit funny and instructive. The means allocated for the celebrating, probably, were spent more or less fairly. Most likely, that fact that the town mayor Michael Chernichenko is accused of a criminal offence played a special role. And in such position the heads could not "cheer" unlike average people.
