Abkhaz President Sergei Bagapsh has said there can be no discussion with the Georgian government over the status of Abkhazia.
Bagapsh said Abkhazia will discuss economic issues with the Georgian authorities, but not political ones.
Bagapsh made the comments to a U.S. delegation visiting the capital city Sukhum.
The U.S. delegation included Stephen Mann, the U.S. State Department envoy for Eurasian conflicts, and the U.S. ambassador to Georgia, Richard Miles.

Maj.-Gen. Sergey Chaban was appointed new commander of the Russian peacekeeping forces deployed in the Abkhaz conflict zone, under the aegis of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
On April 18. Sergey Chaban met with Chief of the General Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces Levan Nikoleishvili and State Minister for Conflict Resolution Issues Goga Khaindrava in Tbilisi.
Goga Khaindrava said after the talks that Chaban’s candidacy was acceptable for the Georgian side.

TBILISI. April 19 (Interfax) - Heidi Tagliavini, the UN secretary general's special representative on settling the conflict between Georgia and Abkhazia, will hold a number of meetings with senior Abkhaz officials in Sukhumi on Tuesday.
Ahead of the trip, Tagliavini said the talks will come as a follow- up to meetings in Geneva and Italy's South Tyrol in early April, which addressed the issue of refugee return.

A United Nations chaired high level group reviewing the Georgian Abkhaz peace process wrapped up two days of talks in Geneva, welcoming the participation of both sides in the meeting as an indication of their commitment to a peaceful settlement of the conflict.

Former Interior Minister Aleksandr Ankvab, whom President Sergei Bagapsh named in February to head the new Abkhaz government, has survived two assassination attempts within the space of just over one month (see "RFE/RL Newsline," 1 March and 4 April 2005). Both attacks on his motorcade took place at the same spot, on the road from Sukhum to Ankvab's home in Gudauta, and he and other Abkhaz officials are convinced they were undertaken by the same persons or group.
