October 18, 2006 -- Abkhazia's parliament today sent an official appeal to the Russian president and Russian parliament asking for recognition as an independent state.

The Abkhaz parliament's document said Abkhazia has all the necessary attributes for sovereignty.

Abkhazia is officially part of Georgia and the Georgian government has repeatedly stated it will not allow any parts of the country to secede.

No NATO's plans to send peacekeepers to Abkhazia and South Ossetia

NATO is not planning to move its peacekeepers into the conflict zones of Georgia with Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Raymond Enot, chairman of the NATO's Military Committee asserted. "NATO has no plans to address this issue," Enot told journalists on Monday answering the question on potential NATO's intention to replace Russian peacemakers in Georgia for NATO's servicemen, the RIA "Novosti" reports.

On September 26, Saakashvili told journalists that the Codori Gorge had acquired a new official name - the Upper (High) Abkhazia. On the following day, president of Georgia solemnly opened in the village of Chkhalta of the Codori Gorge the administrative centre of the Abkhazian exile government.

According to Georgian president, from then on, all the ambassadors and ...

I.M.D.C. condemns resolution of the Security Council on Georgia
Saturday, 14 October 2006

In expressing its utmost disappointment in political behavior of the U.S.A. in the Security Council of the U.N.O., the Political Council of the International Movement for the Decolonization of the Caucasus condemns the resolution of the Security Council on Georgia. The I.M.D.C. considers this issue of the political bargain between the administration of the U.S.A. and Russian imperialism as blackmail of a third sovereign country.

The Political Council of the I.M.D.C. has already noted earlier that Georgia might face the Russian aggressors alone, when having no reliable partner in case military actions would resume. Who can be sure in help from the side of the country, which stubs in the back at a crucial moment?

Georgia’s Separatists to Ask Russia for Recognition

13.10.2006

MosNews
One of Georgia’s two Moscow-backed separatist regions has said it will appeal to Russia’s parliament to recognize its independence, The Associated Press reported.

The legislature in the breakaway region of Abkhazia is working on an appeal to the State Duma, the lower house of Russia’s parliament, Abkhazia’s leader Sergei Bagapsh said Thursday. The appeal seemed designed to deepen the pressure on Georgia’s government as it navigates a worsening dispute with Moscow that has included a Russian blockade on the country.

Abkhazia is a Black Sea province that has run its own affairs since breaking away from government control in a war in the early 1990s, and is one of two Georgian regions seeking independence or union with Russia.

Russia has granted citizenship to most ...

GEORGIA: SOLANA FEARS KOSOVO 'PRECEDENT' FOR ABKHAZIA, SOUTH
OSSETIA. EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security
Policy Javier Solana on October 4 acknowledged that Kosovo's
campaign for independence could set a precedent for Georgia's
breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
Solana also said the European Union could not meet a request
made by Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili for peacekeepers, but
that Brussels is actively trying to "build confidence" between Moscow
and Tbilisi.
Solana told the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs
Committee in Brussels on October 4 that during a recent phone
conversation, Saakashvili had confessed to "tremendous worry" about
the possible consequences that ongoing UN-sponsored Kosovo status
talks could have for Georgia.
The Serbian province is seeking independence for its 2
million citizens, more than 90 percent of whom are ethnic Albanians.
Belgrade is staunchly opposed, but international negotiations --
begun earlier this ...
