“It is necessary to develop direct relations between Abkhazia and EU” said Stanislav Lakoba, Secretary of the Abkhazian Security Council, who met in Sukhum with a group of EU officials, led by Peter Semneby, an EU Special Representative for the <PLACE w:st="on">South Caucasus</PLACE> .
“We could develop relations in fields of economics, commerce, sports and culture. Abkhazia ought not to stay outside the EU” said Lakoba, and added that the starting point should be to develop possible channels of direct access to <PLACE w:st="on">Europe</PLACE> . “Abkhazia does not have to be granted recognition of independence if it wants to maintain full ties with <PLACE w:st="on">Europe</PLACE> . <PLACE w:st="on">Europe</PLACE> should have the willingness to co-work with Abkhazia.”
While diplomats appeared in their words to be favoring Lakoba’s proposals, Semneby said he would soon offer a package of proposals to develop cooperation between Abkhazia and the EU. ÖZ/FT
