SUKHUMI. Aug 17 (Interfax) - Head of district police Laurence Kogonia has reported an armed attack on a U.N. military observer mission in the Gali district of the self-proclaimed republic of Abkhazia.
"Members of the U.N. observer mission were patrolling the security zone in Gali district in two special vehicles. Automatic fire was opened at their vehicles at 1:30 p.m. from a short distance in a wooded area along the road between the villages of Otobaya and Nabakevi. The attackers were aiming at the people in the vehicles," he told Interfax.
"Fortunately none of the observers was hurt, because the vehicles were armored," Kogonia said.
