Separatist Leader Says Kadyrov Not Behind Activist Killings

LONDON -- Akhmed Zakayev, the London-based head of the Chechen Republic-Ichkeria, says he doesn't believe pro-Moscow Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov is behind the recent killings of human rights activist Natalya Estemirova or a children's aid worker and her husband in Chechnya, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Zakayev told RFE/RL on August 12 after meeting with Russian representatives that he believes "the most recent loud killings of Estemirova and [those of the aid worker and her husband that took place] yesterday were clearly directed against the authorities."

He called the three killings "politically motivated, demonstrative murders" that showed that the situation in Chechnya is out of control.

Zakayev also announced that he had agreed with Russian officials to hold a international congress of Chechens to discuss the future of Chechnya and to "develop a unified political platform."

Zakayev said his talks in recent days in London and ...

Many dead in fresh Caucasus clashes

Chechnya, ravaged by two brutal wars, is

battling violence from rebel groups   [AFP]

At least four policemen and two gunmen have been killed in a gun battle in Chechnya, in the latest sign that violence in Russia's Caucasus region is escalating.

Chechnya's interior ministry said security forces battled with two gunmen in Kerla-Yurt, northwest of Grozny, the capital, on Friday, killing at least four officers and injuring four others.

The killings come a day after seven prostitutes were shot dead by fighters in a bath house in neighbouring Dagestan, and four policemen were killed by separatists at a nearby checkpoint.

Five other security force officers were also injured in a separate clash in Chechnya on Thursday, Russia's Interfax news agency reported.

Police blamed the bath house attack on groups who target women deemed to violate the moral standards of Islam and local clan codes.

They said Thursday's massacre, ...

Two police officers killed in separate incidents in Chechnya

08:5712/08/2009

MOSCOW. August 12 (RIA Novosti) - Two police officers were shot dead overnight in separate incidents in the capital of Russia's republic of Chechnya, a police spokesperson said on Wednesday.

The officers were both killed as they returned home from work in separate parts of Grozny.

"Around midnight gunmen shot at a Zhiguli car being driven by a police officer, who died at the scene," the spokesperson said.

The other police officer was killed, he said, when "offenders at a bus stop near a police post fired at him." He later died in hospital from his injuries.

Moscow officially ended its decade-long counterterrorism operation in the volatile North Caucasus republic in April, but violence against law enforcement and other officials has increased in Chechnya and neighboring republics in the past few months.

Prague Watchdog: The Harakiri Of The Mujahedin (Weekly Review)

The harakiri of the mujahedin (weekly review)

By Vadim Borshchev, special to Prague Watchdog

Last week the reporters who wrote about the suicide bombing on Grozny’s Theatre Square were quick to seize on the words of Ramzan Kadyrov, who said that the incident bore witness to the “death agony of the insurgents”.

Like his predecessors, he is bearish (to use a term from economics) about the mujahedin, constantly downplaying their numbers. From a psychological point of view it is quite a justifiable approach: if your enemy is a common criminal, a gangster who doesn’t believe in God or the Devil, if his convictions are just a convenient pretext concealing self-interest and base aspirations, there is no problem in dealing with him. Not for nothing does Kadyrov spend so much time trying to discredit the former Ichkerian leaders.

According to his argument, the insurgents’ death agony, of which ...
