Fire in Chechnya

Unidentified persons set fire to the houses of some law enforcement agents in Dyshne-Vedeno, Vedeno district, on the night of 10 August, a district resident told Caucasian Knot.

All the three houses practically burnt down completely, he said. When the fire was extinguished, the body of a local resident, Ms Abdulkerimov, was found in one of them.

The houses may have been set on fire by a gang that law enforcement agents had encountered in Dyshne-Vedeno last night, an officer of Chechnya's Internal Affairs Ministry thinks.

A combat between members of illegal armed formations and officers of the counter-terrorist centre occurred in this village last night, Caucasian Knot's correspondent reports.

Late at night, a group of rebels of about five penetrated Dyshne-Vedeno, a source with Chechnya's law enforcement agencies says, quoted by RIA Novosti.

A senior Russian military officer and four other soldiers died Sunday in a clash with rebels in Chechnya, news reports said.

Col. Alexander Kayak, the top officer in Chechnya's southern Urus-Martan region, was killed in combat with rebels in the pre-dawn hours, the Interfax and ITAR-Tass news agencies reported, quoting Chechnya's Moscow-backed administration.

Another four servicemen also were killed and two were wounded in fighting in the village of Roshni-Chu, 23 kilometers (14 miles) southwest of the Chechen capital, Grozny.

Kayak led a group of servicemen who rushed to Roshni-Chu after rebels had attacked the house belonging to the Moscow-backed civilian administrator. The house burned to the ground, but the administrator wasn't hurt, Interfax reported.

Chechen caught trying to abduct colleague

GROZNY. Aug 13 (Interfax) - An attempt of a group of armed men to abduct a policeman and a local civilian from the Chechen community of Znamenskoye was foiled on Friday.

Less than in an hour after police received information about the abduction, a task force encircled and then detained the abductors near the village of Goragorsky, a law enforcement source told Interfax on Saturday.

Among those detained were three policemen, two residents of the Chechen district center of Achkhoi-Martan and a resident of the Russian internal republic of Kalmykia.

None of the participants in the operation was hurt. However, a passerby was wounded and was taken to the hospital.
