One year has passed since Natalya Estemirova was killed.

On July 15, 2009, the award-winning rights campaigner was bundled into a car outside her home in Chechnya's capital of Grozny.

Her body was found hours later by the side of a road in the neighboring republic of Ingushetia. She had been shot in the head and chest at close range.

Those who knew Estemirova say Russia lost one its brightest minds and bravest human rights defenders.

"Natasha was an incredibly bright person, both in the sense of intelligence as well as personal sparkle and charisma," says Allison Gill, the director of Human Rights Watch's Moscow office. "She had an ability to earn the trust of people who were terrified and help them ...

One Russian Soldier Dead, Three Wounded In North Caucasus

One Russian soldier was killed and two wounded in Chechnya overnight when unidentified attackers opened fire on their unit as they conducted a search and seizure operation.
July 06, 2010

The incident happened in the Vedensk district as the soldiers were moving through a wooded area.

In Daghestan, unknown assailants opened fire on a convoy of police commandos in the Karabudakhkent district on July 5, wounding a policeman and killing a civilian who was driving behind the convoy.

The Kremlin claims its security operations in Russia's North Caucasus region are succeeding, but attacks on Russian troops and Russian-backed local officials in the region continue.

Window on Eurasia: Another Chechen War Could Soon Break Out, Moscow Analysts Say

Paul Goble

Staunton, July 16 – The security situation in the republics of the North Caucasus has been deteriorating for some time, but now the Russian special forces in Chechnya have accused that republic’s Battalion North, many of whose soldiers earlier served in separatist forces, of "betrayal” and promised to take their revenge, something that could trigger a new Chechen war.
An analysis posted on Folksland.net yesterday said that "alongside the unceasing flow of reports” about violence in Daghestan, Ingushetia, and Kabardino-Balkaria, on July 15, "another ‘bell’” sounded in Grozny, suggesting that "a new Chechen war is not beyond the mountains” (folksland.net/m/articles/view/Novaya-CHechenskaya-ne-za-gorami-rossiyskiy-spetsnaz-obeschaet-razobratsya-s-checheskim-batalonom-Sever).
As "Moskovsky konsomolets” described it, Russian special forces now have radio intercepts which show that soldiers in the Chechen Battalion North shared information on February 4 that cost the Russian troops five dead and numerous wounded ...

Blast in Grozny Injures 5 Russian Police, 2 Civilians

Said Tsarnaev

GROZNY, June 30, 2010 (RIA Novosti)

A suicide bomber blew himself up in the capital of Russia's North Caucasus region of Chechnya on Wednesday, injuring five police officers and two women, Chechen investigators said.

The blast occurred when a 22-year-old local resident approached a police vehicle parked near a concert hall in downtown Grozny.

Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov was in the building at the time of the explosion but said he did not know if he was the bomber's intended target.

"It is unclear what he wanted on his conscience, but the policemen showed their worth and he blew himself up," Kadyrov said.

The president said the blast was minor, adding that not one window in nearby buildings was shattered and people inside the theater did not hear the explosion. He put the ...
