Militants who attacked militaries are searched in Chechnya

A special operation is underway in Chechnya to search the militants who yesterday, on July 9, blew up armoured personnel carrier (APC) of Federal Troops, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent informs.

A source in the law enforcement bodies of the Republic has reported that the incident took place in the vicinity of the Dishni-Vedeno village. As a result of a land mine explosion and subsequent shelling from automatic weapons, three servicemen from an Interior Troops unit of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia were killed and five more wounded.

Despite statements of the Republic's authorities on normalization of the situation, Chechnya faces increased activities of separatists' armed formations. During the recent time only, several armed collisions have taken place between small groups of militants and employees of power agencies. Thus, on July 6, at ...

GROZNY, July 11, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- Security forces are on high alert in Chechnya this week, as the Russian republic's president marks 100 days in office,  RFE/RL's North Caucasus Service reports.

Cars are being searched at checkpoints around Grozny and other towns.

In northern Grozny, one driver was told the reason his car was being searched was that Chechen rebels had received a big sum of money from abroad, and were preparing an attack.

The heightened security measures come as Chechnya's pro-Moscow president, Ramzan Kadyrov, is celebrating his first 100 days in office with a large-scale TV campaign.

Upsurge of Fighting in Chechnya

Summer campaign by rebel fighters casts doubt on official claims that the war is over.

By Umalt Dudayev in Grozny (CRS No. 400, 12-July-07)
In his first public address to the people of Chechnya, the republic’s pro-Moscow president Ramzan Kadyrov announced on July 9 that the fighting had “finally and irreversibly” ended. Chechnya was now “the most stable region in the North Caucasus”, he said.

That same day, however, rebel fighters carried out an attack on a Russian military convoy in the mountainous Vedeno region of southeastern Chechnya. They blew up an armoured troop carrier that was escorting a group of trucks transporting soldiers, and then raked it with automatic fire. According to official reports, three soldiers were killed and five injured in the raid.

A few days earlier, a group of soldiers investigating minefields near the village of Agishty in the ...

Is the war in Chechnya "over" again?

By Ruslan Isayev

CHECHNYA – One year ago, just a few days after Shamil Basayev was killed by a truck blast on the outskirts of the Ingushetian village of Ekazhevo, Sergei Ivanov, the Russian defence minister of the day, flew into Grozny and with an expression of thinly disguised delight said: "This is our bin Laden. I would like to remind you that all the leaders of so-called Ichkeria are now dead. Dudayev, Yandarbiyev, Maskhadov, Basayev. All of them. The war is over and the city needs to be restored... ".

Though Grozny’s restoration has been achieved, albeit only partially, the question of the war is still open and will probably remain so for a long time.

The terrorist threat in Russia has certainly grown less ...
