Events in Chechnya

A group of unidentified persons fired automatic weapons at an UAZ vehicle with four Counter-terrorist Centre officers on the outskirts of Dargo, Vedeno district, at about 8.00 pm yesterday. One of them, the driver, was killed as a result, while the other three sustained wounds and were admitted to hospital, a source with Chechnya's Internal Affairs Ministry said.

Law enforcement agents found a carefully disguised rebel camp as a result of special activities on the outskirts of Sernovodsk, Shuzha district. There were two members of illegal armed formations in the camp, one of them destroyed in a skirmish, Chechnya's Internal Affairs Ministry said.

Besides, in the forest near Assinovskaia (several kilometres from Sernovodsk) officers of the special battalion Zapad ("West") engaged a group of rebels. Three members of illegal armed formations were destroyed as a result, the source said.

From my personal experience as Foreign Minister of Chechnya - in which capacity my main duty is to explain to outsiders the nature of the Chechen conflict - I would say that the biggest obstacle to being understood is ignorance of the history of the conflict. The Russian effort to classify the war as a classic separatist conflict between a rebel territory and a colonial centre obscures the fact that in the long and tragic history of relations between Russia and Chechnya, the tiny Chechen nation has at least four times been on the brink of total annihilation...

It is a mistake to represent this war as only a war for independence - independence is not a goal in itself, but a guarantee of the ...

Chechen Warlord Basayev Accepts 'Terrorist' Label

PRAGUE, 29 July, Caucasus Times - In a U.S.-broadcast interview, Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev has accepted the label of "terrorist" but has said fighting in the separatist republic will not end until every Russian feels the impact of the war.

Basayev made the remarks in an interview with journalist of radio Free Europe - radio Liberty Andrei Babitksy that was broadcast late Thursday on a U.S. television program (ABC network's "Nightline").

Basayev -- the most-wanted man in Russia -- has claimed responsibility for a rebel attack on a school in Beslan last September, in which at least 330 hostages -- half of them children -- died.
The separatist leader has also admitted to or been blamed for dozens of other ...
