Basayev, Umarov in Ingushetia - Chechen police officer
GROZNY. June 29 (Interfax) - The most prominent Chechen separatist
leaders Shamil Basayev and Doku Umarov, are hiding in mountainous areas
in Ingushetia, a Russian North Caucasus republic bordering on Chechnya,
Arbi Zakriyev of the Urus-Martan district police said in a program
broadcast by the Chechen state television channel.
"They have settled in Ingushetia's mountains," Zakriyev said.
"Their lifeline in Chechnya has been cut off, and therefore they
have not turned up in Chechnya lately" but are spending all their time
in the Ingush mountains, Zakriyev said.
The program showed a fragment of a conversation with Adam Pidiyev,
a resident of the Ingush village of Dattykh, who was recently detained
by Chechen law enforcement officers in Ingushetia.
Pidiyev said that he supplied food to Umarov's group of 15 men
almost daily for more than two weeks in ...
