CHECHEN GUNMEN DISCUSS TRUCE;
Nobody knows who proposed or on what terms
Musa Muradov

NO TERRORIST ATTACKS DURING THE G8 SUMMIT?; The Chechen separatist
website reports that the federal authorities have proposed a truce for
the duration of the G8 summit in St. Petersburg. Observers say the
separatists might accept the offer, but demand the body of Aslan
Maskhadov for burial in return. Official Grozny and Moscow
representatives deny any such deals with the guerrillas.

The Chechen separatist website maintains that the federal authorities
contacted Chechen ringleaders through an intermediary and asked them
to refrain from terrorist attacks in Chechnya and Russia (particularly
in Moscow and St. Petersburg) for the duration of the G8 summit. The
report doesn't specify whether the request was written or verbal, or
on whose behalf the request was made. Neither do the
"sensation-seekers" report whether or not gunmen accepted the proposed
truce or what its terms are.

Official representatives of Ichkeria discuss the matter ...

The long road to justice

Hundreds of civilians have been murdered during Russia's dirty war in Chechnya. Faced with a state deaf to protest against atrocities, the only recourse for victims' relatives is now the European Court of Human Rights. James Meek on their desperate quest to see the killers brought to book

The Guardian

In the middle of the afternoon of February 5 2000, when outside there were the sounds of boots crunching on snow, screams and scattered bursts of gunfire from different directions, Malika Labazanova crouched on the floor of her house at No 20, Third Tsimlyansky Lane, Grozny. A young man in camouflage fatigues held the muzzle of an automatic rifle against her head. Both were citizens of the same country, Russia, but he represented the government, and she did not.
