Two members of the irregular Vostok battalion - made up of pro-Russian Chechens collaborators, but fighting under command of Russia's elite Main Intelligence Directorate, or GRU - died in fighting in the devastated capital Jokhar. Three others were wounded. In another part of the city, three Russian invaders were shot. MOSCOW. June 24 (Interfax) - Sulim Yamadayev, commander of Vostok (East) special battalion of the 42nd motorized infantry division, has denied all claims of direct or indirect involvement of his subordinates in the June 4 developments in Borozdinovskaya, Chechnya.
"I take the responsibility to say that the formations of my battalion never conducted any special operations in either Borozdinovskaya or the three villages [Kurdyukovskaya, Kargalinskaya, Duboskaya] located between it and the district capital [Shelkovskya]," he told Interfax on the phone ion Friday.
Eleven local residents disappeared from Borozdinovskaya at the beginning of June. Later reports came that they disappeared after a special operation in Borozdinovskaya in which servicemen from Vostok battalion had been discovered.
"Decisions on such operations cannot be made at the level of battalion," Yamadayev said.
