At night on May 2, one of the villages of the mountainous Vedeno District of the Chechen Republic was shelled by the artillery of the federal forces. As a result of shell explosions, a man was wounded and some households were damaged.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent has learnt about it from employees of the Information Centre of the Union of Chechen NGOs. This fact was not made public either by local authorities or power agencies.

"We've learnt from reliable sources that at night on May 2, Russian militaries exposed Benoy village of the Vedeno District to artillery shelling. At least five shells blew up in the territory of this village. It became known that shortly before the shelling a skirmish took place in this area between militants and law enforcers, then, the militaries decided to shell possible militants' hiding places. ...

New Force in Chechnya

07 May 2009The Moscow TimesThe number of federal servicemen in Chechnya will be halved and transformed into a new force tentatively called the "Committee for Maintaining Safety in the Region," Itar-Tass reported Wednesday. 

The new force will be composed of servicemen from various enforcement agencies, including the Defense and Interior ministries, the report said.

It was unclear Wednesday who would head the Committee for Maintaining Safety in the Region.

Itar-Tass said the new force might start its work at the end of August or beginning of September.

The Kremlin announced April 16 that the counterterrorist operation in Chechnya was over.

Combined federal forces in Chechnya to be replaced by securityoperational group

  MOSCOW. May 6 (Interfax-AVN) - An operational group of Russian
 security forces is to replace the combined federal forces in the North
 Caucasus, a source with the Russian Defense Ministry told Interfax on
 Wednesday.
 "As the counter-terrorist operation regime in Chechnya has been
 lifted, the combined federal forces are to be disbanded by September 1.
 Instead of it, an operational group including servicemen from the
 Defense Ministry, the Interior Forces, and other security agencies is to
 be set up," it said.
 "The operational group is necessary in case a new counter-terrorist
 operation regime is imposed if the situation in Chechnya worsens," the
 source said.
 With the liquidation of the combined federal forces, other forces
 staying in Chechnya on a temporary basis will also be withdrawn, the

Today, Georgian mass media have disseminated information that this week additional subdivisions of Russian troops entered the Akhalgori District of South Ossetia. The information was confirmed by Grigol Vashadze, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia.

"These movements are temporary, and the troops will have to retreat to their territory. Russia will get nothing; it'll have to abandon not only the Akhalgori District, but also all the occupied territories," the "Gazeta.Ru" quotes the Georgian Minister as saying.

At the same time, the official spokesman of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation has stated that Russian troops did not undertake any actions to escalating their presence in the frontier areas of South Ossetia, including the Akhalgori District.

"All this is another provocation of Georgian authorities aimed to distract the country's population from the situation in Georgia as such," the "Interfax" quotes the source.
