Moscow states concentration of Georgian troops at the borders of South Ossetia and Abkhazia

apr 29 2009, 22:00

Georgian troops and police units are concentrated near the borders of South Ossetia and Abkhazia; they set up field camps, observation posts and deploy heavy armaments, as stated today by a Kremlin source.

In his opinion, after withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers the situation in the areas adjacent to South Ossetia and Abkhazia remains unstable and explosive.

"In total, some 2500-strong Georgian military contingent is concentrated here. Over 50 stationary and mobile posts were deployed; active works are underway on engineering support. Armoured vehicles and artillery are brought there," said the Kremlin source.

Besides, he said that tomorrow, on April 30, President of Russia will sign agreements on border guarding with his counterparts from Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The "Interfax" writes that the signing ceremony of top-level bilateral agreements of Russia with Abkhazia and South Ossetia on joint ...

Who is in charge? (weekly review)

By Vadim Borshchev, special to Prague Watchdog

The Russian military are clearly unwilling to accept that with the ending of the counter-terrorist operation they have been relegated to the role of an auxiliary force which cannot take a step without seeking and obtaining permission from the republic’s leadership. In addition, they can hardly be happy with a situation in which they have been stripped of various privileges and extra funding. Last week they made an attempt to regain their special advantages. On Friday April 24 the joint press centre of the federal Russian troops’ operational headquarters for Chechnya circulated a message announcing the launching of  a counter-terrorist operation (CTO) in the Shatoisky and Vedensky districts, as well as in part of the republic’s Shalinsky district. The main argument in support of the operation was the activity of illegal armed ...

Gang members of 'death squads' tell about their crimes in Chechnya

Publication time: 27, Apr, 2009 15:25 Djokhar time

On photo: the victims blown up by Russian "death squads" in Chechnya

The so-called "death squads", consisted mainly from the Russian Special Forces, participate in the war in Chechnya and in Caucasus.

The murderers were picked on a voluntary basis. They were engaged in killings of relatives of the Mujahideen and those who sympathized with them.

Two Russian "high-ranking officers", the members of one of the gangs of "death squads", have told to the British edition of The Times about the "unofficial" methods of struggle with the Mujahideen and with their relatives, as well as the techniques of torture.

According to the newspaper, the murderers presented themselves as "Andrei" and "Vladimir", not naming their surnames for security reasons. They called themselves "zaichiks (little hares)".

According to them, the prisoners and the hostages were tortured with a hammer and ...

Military Relaunches Operations in Chechnya

27 April 2009ReutersThe military launched new counterterrorism operations in at least three districts of Chechnya on Friday, just over a week after it ended similar missions across the whole region, Interfax reported.

Federal commanders reintroduced the security restrictions associated with counterterrorism operations in the Shali, Shatoi and Vedeno districts near the Caucasus Mountains in the region.

"Militants are intensifying their activities in the Shali, Shatoy and Vedeno districts of the republic," Interfax reported, citing an official report. "We have received information on terrorist attacks planned against executive authorities and law enforcement officials."

Officials could not be immediately reached for comment.

Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov declared victory in the war against rebels after the Kremlin lifted security restrictions on April 16.

The Kremlin ordered soldiers into Chechnya in 1999 to end the republic's de facto independence won in a 1994-96 war.

Sporadic fighting has occurred in Chechnya since the counterterrorism operation ...

EWN: Russia Continues Chechnya Military Operations

posted by eagle on as War in Chechnya

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

MOSCOW - Russian Operational Forces in Chechnya are reporting renewed counterterrorism operations in Chechnya just days after the Kremlin ordered a halt to them. But Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov is denying the reports, saying rebel groups have been disbanded, and international terrorists in his republic have been destroyed.

The press spokesman for Russian Operational Forces in Chechnya, Vladimir Patrin, says the unit’s headquarters have noticed activization of illegal armed formations in three Chechen districts - Shali, Shatoi and Vedeno. He says Russian troops have also received information about plans for diversionary and terrorist acts against representatives of Chechnya’s executive branch and law enforcement officials.

Patrin says three home-made devices were discovered at a hiding place in the Vedeno district. He says they were ready for use, and very powerful. According to the spokesman, it was determined the bombs were to have been laid along routes where the convoy of ...
