Clash Near Chechen Village Kills 2
The Associated Press

ROSTOV-ON-DON -- A skirmish between authorities and rebels in Chechnya has left one serviceman and one police officer dead, federal officials said Sunday.

The clash occurred late Saturday near the village of Bas-Gordali in Chechnya's southeastern Nozhai-Yurt region when a group of servicemen and police ran into a group of some 10 militants during a security sweep, Chechnya's branch of the Interior Ministry said.

A serviceman of a federal military unit formed of Chechens and a local police officer were killed in fighting, it said.

Federal forces have been fighting separatist rebels in Chechnya for most of the past dozen years. Although major battles ended several years ago, small clashes continue and rebels often stage hit-and-run attacks on federal troops and their local collaborators and stage explosions.
