3 Killed in Shootout in Restive Chechnya

09.04.2006

MosNews
Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a police car in Chechnya, killing a police officer and his two brothers who were traveling with him, officials said Sunday.

Two or three attackers fired at the police car in the settlement of Sernovodskaya in western Chechnya on Saturday, said Roman Shchekotin, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry’s branch for southern Russia. The attackers fled, The Associated Press reported.

Chechnya has been devastated by two wars pitting Russian forces against separatist rebels in the past 12 years, and violence often linked to the Chechen conflict has also plagued nearby regions in the North Caucasus, an impoverished strip of republics populated largely by mostly Muslim ethnic minorities.
