GROZNY, Chechnya - Two soldiers were killed and three others seriously injured when a remote controlled mine exploded in the Zavodskoi district of Grozny. This took place last Saturday near the Solionaya Balka settlement during the time military field engineers were walking on the road.

On that same day unknown persons opened fire on a car carrying officers of the Chechen Interior Ministry in Grozny's Leninsky district. Two policemen were killed as a result; the attackers escaped. An investigation into the incident is now underway.

ROSTOV-ON-DON -- Federal and Chechen forces battled fighters holed up in an apartment building in Grozny on Friday, killing at least five fighters and leaving as many as six federal troops dead, officials and news reports said.

The daytime gunbattle came hours after federal forces staged a pre-dawn raid, killing four fighters and seizing two portable anti-aircraft missile systems from rebels near the main air base.

The fighting in and around Grozny was some of the fiercest in several months.

State television showed helicopters circling over a nine-story apartment building in Grozny as heavily armed soldiers fired repeatedly. Smoke later could be seen billowing out of the building, which, like many buildings in Grozny, is already ruined from nearly a decade of war and violence.

GROZNY/MAKHACHKALA. April 20 (Interfax) - Two soldiers, were injured by landmines on Tuesday, a local law enforcement source told Interfax by phone on Wednesday.

"A Defense Ministry serviceman sustained injuries as a result of a landmine explosion in the village of Tazen in the Vedeno district early [Tuesday] morning. Another soldier, who is serving in Chechnya under contract, was injured by an explosion that occurred in the same village three hours later," the source said.

Both servicemen were hospitalized, he said. Their injuries are not life-threatening.

CHECHNYA - On April 20 in the Leninsky District of Grozny a base of the Chechen OMON came under fire from unknown persons. At around 11pm several grenades exploded on the base’s territory, fired from an underbarrel grenade launcher in the street.

After the policemen opened answering fire, the attackers, of whom there were probably three, disappeared.

On examination of the place from which the firing came, discovery was made of a Niva jeep which had been abandoned by the attackers, and OMON personnel took it back to the base. As it was being examined, there was an explosion. As a result, one officer died, and four were wounded.

A rebel from the Chechen field commander Ruslan Gelayev's illegal armed group, the emir of Novyi Sharoi, Achkhoi-Martan district, was detained in a special operation in Chechnya, Major General Ilya Shabalkin, spokesman for the Regional Operations Headquarters for the Counter-terrorist Operation in the North Caucasus (ROH), told Interfax on 24 April. He said the emir had commanded a group that had "systematically committed terrorist acts on motorways in the immediate vicinity of Novyi Sharoi and in the village itself, threatening and executing those who refused to cooperate."

Shabalkin also added five active members of illegal armed formations had been detained in Chechnya over the past 24 hours.
