Russian Police Lieutenant-Colonel Killed in Grozny

GROZNY, Chechnya – Movsredin Kantayev, a police lieutenant-colonel working with the Russian Interior Ministry, has been killed in Chechnya. According to a source in the Chechen Interior Ministry, the policeman’s body was discovered on the motorway near the village of Petropavlovskaya, Grozny District, in his own passenger car.

Kantayev received several gunshot wounds, from which he died on the spot. His attackers stole his duty weapons: a Stechkin pistol and a Makarov pistol.

Kantayev was the head of the operational-investigative bureau of the Naursky District Police Department of the Russian Interior Ministry’s Central Command for the Southern Federal Region.

In addition, a Russian military serviceman was wounded today in the Staropromyslovsky District of Grozny ...

Chechnya fighting leaves six dead, five injured

Fighting between pro-Moscow forces and separatists in war-torn Chechnya has left six people dead and five injured on the Russian side in the past 24 hours, a local government official said Monday.

In one incident, one Russian soldier died and two others were injured after their jeep blew up near the village of Tsa-Vedeno, which lies in the rebels’ stronghold in the southern mountains, said the official in Chechnya’s pro-Moscow administration, on condition of anonymity.

Two Russian sappers died when they tried to defuse an explosive device near the village of Chechen-Aul, south of Grozny, and a Chechen policeman died and his partner was injured as a result of a mine explosion near the town of Sernovodsk in western Chechnya, he said.

Two troops died and two were injured in other attacks throughout the mountainous republic.

MOSCOW. April 8 (Interfax) - Chechen First Deputy Prime Minister Ramzan Kadyrov told journalists in Moscow on Friday that militant Shamil Basayev was preparing to assassinate him, but that this had been prevented.

"We have seized one of Basayev's closest associates who was allegedly preparing to assassinate me," Kadyrov said.

"They were preparing a man who was allegedly supposed to blow me up," Kadyrov said.

CHECHEN TERRORISTS STEP UP ACTIVITIES

GROZNY, April 9 (RIA Novosti) - Two local policemen have been killed in the Chechen capital, a source in the Interior Ministry of the North Caucasian republic said.

"At 14:15, Moscow time, on Friday the bodies of two criminal investigation officers of the Chechen Interior Ministry were discovered in a Lada office car on the bank of the Sunzha river in Leninski district of Grozny. They were found having gunshot wounds", the source said.

The policemen were gunned down and their Kalashnikov submachine guns, Makarov pistols and service ICs were stolen, he said.

Over the past 24 hours one explosion and two firings have been registered in Grozny, the source said.
