Aldy – a case still open

The film we present below is dedicated to the massacre in the village of Novye Aldy on February 5, 2000. This incident was one of the most terrible and bloody pages of the war in Chechnya.

A film about the events of February 5, 2000 in the village of Novye Aldy, Chechnya, where OMON security police from St. Petersburg, Russia, carried out a  "mop-up” operation. Residents of the village say that  after the raid they buried 82 corpses, and the Memorial human rights centre later documented the killing of at least 56 people. No insurgents were among those who were shot – all were civilians: old people, women and children. The operation at Novye Aldy was one of the bloodiest in the history of the Second Chechen War.

The film is based on documentary video footage taken by residents of Novye Aldy on February ...

(A note by Prague Watchdog's coordinator of February 7: This material appeared on the Kavkaz-center website in violation of the reprint rules for our materials, and even without mentioning the names of the author and the translator).

The weather in early February 2000 was nasty, cold and grey. It was as if nature were responding to the horror of what was taking place and to the fear that was spilling over everywhere.

After their defence of Grozny the Chechen insurgents had fled to the mountains, leaving dead and wounded as they went. Now that Russia’s generals and politicians had tasted real victory they were almost impossible to stop.

The men who managed to escape from the combat zone no longer expected a quick end to the war. They were preparing to survive in terrible ...

Prague Watchdog: The Truth Of The Facts (Weekly Review)

The truth of the facts (weekly review)

By Vadim Borshchev, special to Prague Watchdog

The military situation in Chechnya is a nebulous subject, and because of the lack of reliable information we can only make  rough and hypothetical guesses about the true situation. Ramzan Kadyrov’s promises to "put a quick end” to the armed underground are no longer taken seriously even at government level. Openly ignoring Kadyrov’s wish to stop all talk about war, in their communiqués the law enforcement agencies increasingly focus on what appears to be an unprecedented rise in the number of attacks and acts of terrorism, and the rapidly deteriorating situation in the republic. Alas, the reports that emanate from the websites of the Caucasus Emirate and those associated with it cannot really be considered suitable for analysis. The propaganda element in them is so strong as to make it ...

posted by eagle on as War in Chechnya

February 7, 2010

There are no traces of devastation in Chechnya- Kadyrov.

GROZNY, February 7 (Itar-Tass) - Ramzan Kadyrov, the president of Chechnya, has said that "there are no traces of devastation" in the republic's territory. "The republic is developing dynamically thanks to the selfless work of the Chechen people.
