Russia to form special battalions to fight terrorism in Chechnya
Moscow | December 22, 2005 8:36:24 PM IST

Russia is planning to set up two special battalions to fight terrorism in Chechnya, a high-ranking military official declared here today.

''We are planning to enlist Chechen natives, experts from the anti-terrorism centre to form special battalions,'' RIA Novosti news agency quoted the commander of the Russian Interior Ministry Troops Col General Nikolai Rogozhkin as saying.

''These battalions, called ''North'' and ''South'' will be deployed in the Chechen capital Grozny and Vedensky district of Chechnya,'' he said and added the overall Interior Ministry Troops contingent in Chechnya might be reduced in 2006.

''Depending on the tasks set for the spring-summer period, next year, the contingent could be reduced. The amount of the task will be determined by the regional headquarters,'' he said.

Chechens fight for the right to live on their own land
Parliamentary elections were held on 27 November. These returned only representatives of the “branches” of Russian parties to the Chechen parliament. Moreover, the “majority” are from the pro-Putin United Russia Party and even the LDPR and Rogozin’s Motherland, parties that have frequently put forward such “original” solutions to the Chechen question as “A good Chechen is a dead Chechen”. True, there are also deputies from the “branches” of the SPS, a party that sees the solution to the Chechen question in the division of Chechnya into “pro-Russian” and “mountain-tribal” sectors, i.e. in the creation of a reservation in the mountains. There are also deputies from Yabloko (an acronym that also means “apple”). This does seem more likely, as it is the only party to have consistently opposed the war in Chechnya; but ...

RADIOACTIVE levels at a chemical plant in Chechnya were found to have exceeded normal levels by 58,000 times, prosecutors said yesterday after opening a criminal investigation.

Chechnya's top prosecutor said the inquiry would look into the alleged improper storage of radioactive materials by a state-owned firm in the Chechen capital, Grozny, in a case which highlighted concerns about the control of such material in Russia and safeguards to prevent terrorists getting hold of it.

The investigation was prompted by tests that found radiation levels at the Grozny Chemical Factory had exceeded normal levels by tens of thousands of times, the prosecutor said, calling it a "catastrophic radioactivity situation".

The prosecutor said that 27-29 uncontrolled elements are emitting radiation at the plant, which is located near residential buildings and a bus station.
