Causewayhead man tackling Chechnyan warNov 11 2009 by Iain Howie, Stirling Observer Wednesday YEARS of war and deep-set divisions in Chechnya are being tackled head-on by a Causewayhead man. John Coutts has taken part in a project involving stories which are aimed at promoting peace in the war-ravaged country. The Russian speaker translated works for the book “Power of Goodness: Stories of Nonviolence and Reconciliation” which is being distributed in schools. He also helped out with the teachers’ handbook which will assist the teaching. The book, now in its second edition, has been updated and revised and has received the backing of the Chechen government. It includes translated stories in three languages. Short stories from the region, including one about a woman who feeds a Russian soldier when others would not, are included. The publishers hope that the messages from the stories will promote understanding between ethnic groups in Chechnya and their Russian neighbours. Mr Coutts said: “I ... >> full

Rights Activists; Chechen Authorities Passing Off Slain Young People as RebelsPublication: Eurasia Daily Monitor November 10, 2009 01:37 PM By: The Jamestown Foundation Artur Duzgaev Chechen officials claim to have killed and captured a large number of rebels in the republic in recent weeks. However, human rights groups have cast doubts on the claims, saying that some of those identified as rebels were in fact civilian non-combatants.
The Kavkazsky Uzel (Caucasian Knot) website today (November 10) quoted an unidentified Chechen security official as saying that 35 rebels were killed and another 42 rebels and their accomplices were captured in Chechnya in October alone. The source said six rebel bases and nine arms caches were discovered last month, from which 37 small arms, seven anti-tank grenade launchers with 30 rounds and more than 6,000 rounds of small arms ammunition were seized.
Judging by reports this week, the battlefield successes of Chechen security forces are continuing. Interfax reported ... >> full

Moscow and Grozny Evince Growing Nervousness Over Regional SecurityPublication: Eurasia Daily Monitor November 9, 2009 Russian forces in North Caucasus Today, all Russia’s actions in the south are dictated by the increasingly active armed underground in the North Caucasus and Russia’s desire to oppose its growing influence on the region’s indigenous population. In the summer of 2009 alone 462 acts of violence were reported, while throughout the whole of 2008 only 265 incidents were registered. As a result, more than 442 persons died in the summer of 2009, while there were only 150 deaths reported in the entire year of 2008 (www.regnum.ru, October 28). In other words, the number of acts reported throughout the region by Russia has nearly doubled.
That is why it is not surprising that despite the announced Russian troop level the opposite process is occurring. Troops are being redeployed to the region, in addition to the ones that have ... >> full

Violence in Chechnya has Spiked Since Counter-Terrorist Operation’s EndPublication: Eurasia Daily Monitor November 6, 2009 11:18 AM By: The Jamestown Foundation Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov November 3 marked the 200th day since the Russian government formally ended the “counter-terrorist” operation it launched in Chechnya in September 1999, and statistics collected by the Kavkazsky Uzel (Caucasian Knot) website show that more blood has been spilled since the April 16 announcement of the operation’s end than during the 200 days leading up to it.
According to the website, 208 people were killed and 157 wounded in Chechnya between April 16 and November 3, and particularly noteworthy was the rebels’ revival of the use of suicide bombers. During that 200 day period, there were at least 92 shootouts between the rebels and security forces, in which reportedly 120 rebels were killed, 110 were captured and six surrendered. By way of comparison, in the 200 days before the counter-terrorist ... >> full

| GROZNY, November 5 (Itar-Tass) - One militant was killed and two others detained in Chechnya during a security sweep carried out in the republic, the chief of the Chechen Interior Ministry’s press service, Magomed Deniyev, said on Thursday. According to Deniyev, an unidentified person fired several shots with a handgun at police who tried to detain him. In the shootout that followed the criminal was killed. A passport issued in the name of Artur Dugzayev, a handgun, two loaded magazines and a makeshift grenade were found on him. Deniyev said Dugzayev had returned to Chechnya from Baku ten days ago with the aim of joining a gang operating in the republic’s Urus-Martan district.
