ROSTOV-ON-DON, Russia: A clash with insurgents in Chechnya killed a
Russian serviceman and wounded three police officers, the troubled
republic's interior ministry said Wednesday.
The skirmish occurred Tuesday night in the Shatoi region, in the rugged
mountains of Chechnya's south, the ministry said in a statement.
Although major combat in the Chechnya conflict died down years ago, small rebel bands continue to operate in the mountains.
The clash occurred as a group of local police and Interior Ministry
troops were conducting a search for insurgents, the ministry said. The
rebel group consisted of up to 10 fighters, according to the ministry.

The mutual accusations of collaboration with the FSB being hurled at one another by representatives of the Chechen resistance movement now have a true basis in reality. Deliberately or not, the accusations play into the hands of the Russian special services. They include the charge brought by Akhmed Zakayev against Dokka Umarov of betraying the interests and independence of Ichkeria in contravention of the principles of the Ichkerian Constitution, and the accusation which boomeranged back at him of complicity in the murder of Aslan Maskhadov and Abdul-Khalim Sadulayev, and in the attempted assassination of Dokka Umarov.

Potential guerrilla recruits detained in Chechnya’s Shatoysky district

CHECHNYA – Police in the Shatoysky district of Chechnya have detained four young men who were allegedly preparing to join a guerrilla unit.
All four detainees are residents of the city of Argun, and the eldest is 22. One of them is a student at a Grozny institute of higher education. The other three were working as labourers on construction sites.
A source in the law enforcement agencies says that the detainees are being held in the Chechen Interior Ministry's remand prison (IVS). They are being questioned in an attempt to ascertain the identies of people who are trying to recruit young men into the ranks of the guerrillas.
