Publication time: 5 November 2006, 18:43

A firefight between Mujahideen and Russian invaders broke out in the Village of Nesterovka in the Sunja district on Saturday, November 4, 2006, according to a Rusian news report. The Russians claimed that 3 Mujahideen had been purportedly killed, saying nothing about their own casualties.

Earlier Russian puppets said that a "special operation" had been under way in Nesterovka, starting from Saturday morning.

As of press time, no information about this firefight has been received from the Chechen Military Command.

In an earlier Russian report about a battle in the environs of the village Dargo on November 1, 2006 , their six soldiers were left dead and 8  wounded, and one Mujahid martyred.

The Russians reported then only that 2 their soldiers had been wounded and 2 Mujahideen martyred in the battle.

ROSTOV-ON-DON, Russia - Seven police officers were killed when rebels ambushed a police convoy in Chechnya, officials said Wednesday.

Rebels fired on police cars near the village of Dai in the Shatoi region in Chechnya's forested southern mountains on Tuesday, killing the seven officers and wounding one more, said Roman Shchekotin, a spokesman for the Russian Interior Ministry's branch in southern Russia.

The attackers fled and authorities have failed to track them down.

Chechnya, a largely Muslim region in southern Russia, has been plagued by separatist conflict for more than a decade. Large-scale battles ended years ago, but rebels continue to target federal forces and their local collaborators in regular raids, ambushes and mine explosions.

Following the deaths of Chechen Republic Ichkeria President Abdul-Khalim Sadullayev and veteran field commander Shamil Basayev on June 16 and July 10, respectively, Russian and pro-Moscow Chechen officials pronounced the Chechen resistance a spent force, numbering no more than a few dozen die-hard fighters. But more recent assessments indicate that the Chechen resistance numbers at least 700 men and still poses a "serious threat."

PRAGUE, November 8, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- Russian assessments of the strength of the Chechen resistance have historically been approximate and contradictory, appearing sometimes to have been exaggerated or downplayed for purely political considerations.

The Russian daily "Kommersant," for example, on November 7 listed 14 separate estimates made between February 2000 and November 2006.
