ACCIDENTAL SHELLING WOUNDS SIX
November 10, 2005

Newsru.com reported on November 10 that federal forces had shelled Starye Atagi at dawn the previous day instead of a rebel base because of mistaken "coordinates." As a result, a barrage of 12 shells hit the village, wounding six residents—four women, an eight-year-old girl and a man—and destroying eight homes. The condition of eight-year-old Elina Yusupova was characterized as "grave." The other casualties included 70-year-old Musa Yusupov, 28-year-old Aimani Yusupova, 52-year-old Yakha Yusupova— apparently all members of the same family—and 68-year-old Khamila Saidova. Chechnya's military commandant, Grigory Fomenko, confirmed the shelling on the evening of November 9. "There was a mistake in artillery calculations," newsru.com quoted him as saying. "In reality, the plan was to strike a militant base in a completely different location. The prosecutor will sort everything out." According to the website, fragments from 152mm ...

A Bloody September
In September 1999, a series of middle-of-the-night explosions shook Russian cities destroying several apartment blocks. More than 300 people died as they slept. The attacks, attributed to Chechen separatists, boosted the popularity of the hawkish would-be President Vladimir Putin. Then, a strange thing happened. A bomb was defused by the local police, and the trail of evidence led to the door of the FSB, the secret service. The FSB was forced to admit "an ill-conceived exercise", which was remarkably similar to the earlier explosions. Ever since, a question has lingered over Mr. Putin's presidency: Who Done It? Why was the “esxercise” incident covered up?Witnesses disappeared? Inquisitive journalists intimidated? Critical TV stations closed down? And who was behind the assassinations of two members of Russian Parliament, who persisted with their own ...

Police station under attack all night

On the night of 11 November 2005, unidentified persons were shooting automatic weapons and grenade launchers in Elistanzhi, Vedeno district, at the local police station based in a former shop and at its premises. The shooting began in the evening on 10 November and continued until dawn on 11 November. None of the police officers or civilians suffered because of the shooting. The police hid in the basement of the station. Dwellers of nearby homesteads were also very scared with the developments and spent the night in the basements of their houses.

Window panes were broken and roofs were damaged in some homesteads during the shooting. At dawn on 11 November 2005, intensive shelling of the forest in the vicinity of Elistanzhi began from the disposition of federal forces, the Russian-Chechen Friendship Society reports.
