GROZNY, October 19 (Itar-Tass) -- According to preliminary reports, gunmen penetrated into the building of the Chechen parliament in the Lenin District of Grozny, a source in the army, police and security services of the North Caucasian Federal District told Itar-Tass.

"According to preliminary information, shooting is going on there. Several people were killed or wounded,” he said.

Police units are coming to the scene of the incident.

Russian Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev holds an emergency session with Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov on Tuesday in connection with an attack on Chechen parliament, the ministry press centre reports.

Armed men have seized the parliament building in Russia's Caucasus region of Chechnya, according to a local interior ministry official.

Russia's Interfax news agency reported, citing an unidentified law-enforcement source, that the attackers had taken an unspecified number of hostages during Tuesday's raid in Grozny, the capital of Chechnya.

A bomber and two armed men carried out the attack, the Russian international news agency RIA said.

"At the moment the shooting is continuing and special units of interior ministry troops, riot police and the Chechen presidential security service are arriving at the building," a security source told Interfax.

RIA said a suicide bomber had detonated explosives just outside parliament and that two armed attackers then engaged in a gun battle with guards around the building.

Two policemen were killed in a shootout with unidentified gunmen in the capital ofRussia's North Caucasus republic ofChechnya, the republican prosecutor's office said on Sunday, RIA Novostireported.

The police were attacked late on Saturday near a food market in the Leninsky district of Grozny. The attackers were driving a Lada car without number plates, the prosecutor's office said.

An investigation into the attack has been launched. Measures are under way to apprehend the attackers, the prosecutor's office said.

Terrorist attacks and shootouts with police are common in Russia's troubled North Caucasus republics, especially in Dagestan and neighboring Chechnya and Ingushetia.

The Kremlin has vowed to clamp down on militant groups in the North Caucasus while stepping up efforts to boost the local economy.

In yet another sign of a serious split within the ranks of the North Caucasus insurgency, three top Chechen rebel field commanders have renounced their oath of allegiance to Doku Umarov, the Chechen rebel leader and "emir” of the North Caucasus Emirate. They then proceeded to elect a new leader – Khusein Gakaev, who is accused by the Chechen authorities for leading the attack on the home village of Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov on August 29.
