Kadyrov Launches Special Operation Targeting Dokka Umarov

Publication: Eurasia Daily Monitor

Dokka Umarov

Violence and unrest continued in parts the North Caucasus over the past week, as the Kremlin picked the governor of Krasnoyarsk to serve as representative in the new North Caucasus Federal District, and a top general accused Georgia of training North Caucasus rebels.

Security forces in Dagestan killed four suspected militants on the Kavkaz federal highway in Dagestan’s Karabudakhkentsky district in the early hours of January 20. Itar-Tass quoted the press service of the Dagestan branch of the Federal Security Service (FSB) as saying that the incident took place when security officers stopped a car for a document check near the village of Manaskent, some 30 kilometers from the capital Makhachkala, and people inside opened fire. All four people inside the vehicle, including the driver, were killed in the ensuing shootout, and there were no ...

Kadyrov Orders Formation of Special Unit to Target Dokka Umarov

Publication: Eurasia Daily Monitor

Violence continues unabated in the North Caucasus in the second week of January, with apparent insurgency-related incidents reported in Ingushetia, Dagestan, Chechnya and Kabardino-Balkaria.

Unidentified attackers fired automatic weapons at the home of a businessman and his family in Nazran, Ingushetia, early today (January 14). No one was hurt, but the house was damaged. On January 11, unidentified attackers shot and killed a resident of the village of Ordzhonikidzevskya in Ingushetia’s Sunzha district. The victim had been an employee of the republic’s interior ministry until 2008.

Also on January 11, a powerful roadside bomb was found in the village of Ekazhevo in Ingushetia’s Nazran district. Bomb disposal experts destroyed the device, which consisted of a metal pail filled with explosives with a detonator attached, in a controlled explosion. Late on the evening of January 10, ...

The sweet shame of prosperity

By Usam Baysayev, special to Prague Watchdog

On his blog an old acquaintance of mine has been wondering whether his life has improved after fifteen years of war. His answer is predictable: no, it hasn't. Only a completely cynical person, one who lives in an ivory tower and doesn’t care about what other people think, could say anything other. After all, there are very few people who can openly admit that the war is the reason for their wealth and celebrity. For it could well be a cause for shame to suppose that one’s biography is woven not from one’s own merits but from the misfortunes of others.

I am not ashamed. When the war first started, I was just thirty. Thirty plus two days and several hours, to be precise. I had been out of work for a year and a ...

KC: Еven By Killing Hundreds Of Thousands Of People, A Slave Does Not Cease To Be A Slave

Еven by killing hundreds of thousands of people, a slave does not cease to be a slave

Publication time: 28 December 2009, 21:23

If we take a look at the history of Chechen people for at least last 300 years and if do elementary, the most superficial analysis, then even the most ignorant person would see clearly obvious fact that Russia being under any rulings has the same policy toward the nations of the Caucasus, i.e. aiming the total destruction of Islam and the physical elimination of that part of the nation that can think, express and defend the interests and will of the people.

You may ask, why don't eliminate everyone? It's because every nation has a layer of slaves, which has neither the will nor the desire to defend their religion, freedom, dignity or honor. And here it does not matter what is slave's race or color, and in what language ...

Prague Watchdog: Chechnya. Forget It.

Chechnya. Forget it.

By Andrei Babitsky, special to Prague Watchdog

Prague, Czech Republic

In this text I want to combine two lines of thought, as to me they seem interrelated. The first is a couple of comments on  Sergei Markedonov’s article ‘15 years of war...’, while the second is an assessment of the outcome of the war as it looks today. Regarding the article, the theses in it which I find unacceptable are muted and not obvious. But in general the message can be grasped without much difficulty. As I understand it, the article says that Russia had a right to send troops into Chechnya, which it considered to be part of itself, because the republic had no "single centre of decision-making and executive power." To me this looks like an artificial excuse. Since when has a country's internal confusion been considered grounds for starting ...
