GROZNY, Russia - Russian officials say two militants and a police officer have been killed in a shootout in Chechnya.
Interior Ministry official Valentin Talalayev said Sunday that the militants had been holed up in an apartment building on the outskirts of the Chechen capital, Grozny.
He said the dead militants were identified as participants in attacks on federal military and local police.
Full-scale fighting in Chechnya, which was devastated by two separatist wars over the last 16 years, ended long ago.
But small groups of militants have continued regular raids against authorities in Chechnya and neighbouring provinces in the predominantly Muslim Northern Caucasus region.
