ROSTOV-ON-DON, Russia: A clash between security forces and gunmen who attacked a school and house in Chechnya killed one policeman and wounded four other officers, the regional Interior Ministry said Tuesday.
The ministry said the attack by about five gunmen took place overnight in Gukhoi, a village in the rugged mountains of the republic's south, where separatist rebel bands continue to elude Russian soldiers and police.
The attackers were armed with grenade launchers and automatic weapons, the ministry said. The gunmen were not apprehended.
Russian forces and Chechen rebels have fought two wars since 1994. Major offensives died down several years ago, but small clashes continue along with bombings of Russian patrols by remote-controlled explosives.
In neighboring Ingushetia, which has been afflicted with a sharp rise in violence in recent months, two suspects were detained in last week's killing of the three members of a Russian-speaking teacher's family, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported. It was the second fatal attack on the family of an ethnic Russian teacher this summer, leading to speculation that insurgents are trying to increase ethnic tensions.
Four policemen were killed Friday in a car bombing in the center of Nazran, Ingushetia's principal city.
