A message posted today, Monday, November 27, 2006 to the Arabic website of the Chechen jihad, confirmed the death on Sunday of Chechen Mujahideen commander Abu Hafs al-Urduni (the Jordanian). The message states Abu Hafs was killed in a gun battle with Russian commandos and asks that he and two other Mujahideen be recognized as martyrs.

Abu Hafs, 33, was born in Zarqa, Jordan, the birthplace of deceased al-Qaeda in Iraq head, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Abu Hafs arrived in Chechnya in 1995, where he worked under the command of Samir Saleh Abdullah al-Suwaylem. Suwaylem, also known as Ibn al-Khattab, was a Saudi-born commander and financier of Chechen Mujhahideen through both wars and until his death in 2002.

In the past, Abu Hafs was featured in videos produced by the Chechen Mujahideen, which were then distributed throughout the jihadi network.

On October 16, 2006, a video message from Abu Hafs in Chechnya, was distributed on jihadi message boards, in which he prays for the Mujahideen and their supporters, thanking donors for their generosity toward the families of those killed in battle. The 2:41 video was produced by the Turkish-language jihadist network, Mucadele, and was sent to SITE Intel subscribers. In addition, on October 26, 2006, in an 8:33 video message also issued via the Mucadele network, Abu Hafs is shown seated next to Commander Abu Abdullah al-Turki as he reminds Muslims in Turkey not to lose sight of the Chechen jihad amidst the rise of other fronts in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Palestine. The video was sent to SITE Intel subscribers.

A translation of the message is provided to our Intel Service members.

The site says that Abu Hafs was born in Jordan in the year 1973, and after graduation from the university, he went to Chechnya in the year 1995, to fight the Russian aggressors. Then he joined Mujahideen under Khattab's command. Due to his noticeable participation, military capabilities and strategic planning that he was recognized of, he assumed the position as an instructor. After commander Amir Khattab became Shaheed, Abu Hafs was appointed assistant to Amir Abu Waleed. When Amir Abu Waleed became Shaheed, Abu Hafs assumed the position of Amir of non-Chechen Mujahideen until he became Shaheed on Sunday, 27-NOV-2006, with two other Mujahideen.
