Mar 31 2011, 22:10

On March 29, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) ruled on the case "Esmukhambetov et al versus Russia" (Application No. 23445/03) that Russia is responsible for human deaths during the military operation in Chechnya in 1999.

The case deals with the death on September 12, 1999, of residents of the village of Kogi, located in the southeast of the Chechen Republic, not far from the administrative border with Dagestan, in the bombardment and shelling from the air during a counterterrorist operation. The applicants were 27 persons who lived or were in Kogi at the time of events, as reads the statement of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" received by the "Caucasian Knot" editorial office.

As noted in the materials of the case, in the evening on September 12, 1999, two military Su-25 aircrafts appeared in the sky above the ...

Three innocent Chechens shot by Kadyrov?

February 27th, 2011

Today, Russian media informed of three "rebels" that have been shot in Chechnya near the village Yandi, in Ach'khoy-Martan district.

Kadyrov stated that they killed three "terrorists" in the battle which occurred in the mountains early in the morning. Also, Kadyrov said that these three rebels belonged before to Chechen commander named Muslim Gakayev.

To remind, earlier, Kadyrov gangs captured three Chechen youths in the city of Shali accusing them for fighting in the team of Muslim Gakayev. Therefore, there is a possibility that Kadyrov gangs shot those prisoners in the mountains so that Kadyrov may inform Kremlin of his loyalty.

On the other side, Russian terrorists claimed earlier that it was their job and that their gangs have been involved in killing three Chechen "rebels". To such claim, Kadyrov gangs responded immediately saying that Russian occupants were far enough from Yandi village to battle with ...

Explosions in Grozny were not terror acts, power agents assert

Feb 10 2011, 22:20

The three explosions that occurred in the evening on February 8 in two districts of Grozny, the Chechen capital, were not terror acts. In one case a grenade blew up, while the two other explosions could be just of everyday origin, sources from power structures of Chechnya believe.

"The explosions in the Leninsky and Oktiabrskiy Districts of Grozny, which happened in the evening on February 8, do not fall under the definition of a 'terror act'. The information about them was wrongly presented by the media," said a spokesman from the regional law enforcement bodies.

"The two explosions, which occurred at 7:45 and 8:00 p.m. in Lermontov Street in Grozny, were apparently directed against a private security officer at the local MIA. One small-power explosive device was triggered in the garbage bin near the officer' house; the second one - under his Toyota ...

Friend of resident of Moscow Region killed in special operation in Chechnya claims of persecution by FSB

Feb 10 2011, 21:00

The office of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" in Grozny was approached by Magomed Edilov, 51, a local resident and a friend of a resident of the Moscow Region, who perished in a special operation in Chechnya. Mr Edilov complained of being harassed by FSB agents.

According to his story, his problems started after his friend Nikita Blashkov, 26, a native of Ramenskoye, Moscow Region, was killed in Chechnya under unclear circumstances.

Edilov said that on October 21 Blashkov was in the train from Moscow to Grozny aiming to visit him, and he told about it to Magomed by phone. The latter was supposed to meet him on October 23 at 6:40 a.m. Moscow time in the village of Chervlyonaya, Shelkovskoy District of Chechnya, but Blashkov never came.

"Later Edilov learnt that the middle of the ...
