ROSTOV-ON-DON, Russia – Police in a restive region of southern Russia say militants killed a police colonel whose unit fought extremism.

Marina Kyasova, a police spokesman in the Kabardino-Balkaria republic, said two suspected extremists fatally shot Col. Khasan Bogatyryov and then fled.

The ITAR-Tass news agency reported that aircraft were being used to search for the men who killed the colonel on Sunday.

Kabardino-Balkaria is the location of Mount Elbrus, the highest mountain in Europe. It is among the republics in southern Russia that have been destabilized by an Islamic militancy that has spread across the North Caucasus region after two separatist wars in Chechnya.
