An official of the Supreme Court of Russia's North Caucasus Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria was shot dead by unknown gunmen, local police said on Sunday.
The official was killed on Saturday night when he went out into the street from a private house where he had attended a wedding. The gunmen fired several pistol shots at him. The official died from wounds on the scene of the attack, the police said.
While Chechnya, under the leadership of former-separatist-fighter-turned-Kremlin-ally Ramzan Kadyrov, has seen a marked reduction in militant attacks in recent years, violence has erupted in the neighboring republics of Ingushetia, Dagestan and Kabardino-Balkaria.
On Sunday, bomb technicians defused two roadside bombs found on Saturday in the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria.
The bombs were found in two plastic bags at the intersection of Rustaveli and Kalmykova Streets in Nalchik. The place was cordoned off by police, following which the explosive devices were defused.
