A gunman exploded himself when firing at regional security officers early Friday in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.
"An unidentified gunman opened automatic fire at 4 a.m. Moscow time on Friday at the district department of Federal Security Services (FSB) building in the town of Nartkala in the Urvan district and was attempting to escape in the yards, but exploded from a homemade bomb planted on him," said a prosecutor source.
A criminal case has been launched.
Meanwhile in another North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, five militants have been killed during a special operation in the Kirovaul village of the Kizilyurtovsky region. Identities of the insurgents were being established.
Violence is common in Russia's North Caucasus republics, especially Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia, with militants frequently targeting police and officials.
Moscow has said it would try its best to bring stability to the region and tackle terrorism.
