FSB Captures 'Legendary' Ingush Field Commander The Ingush field commander known as Amir Magas, after being detained by police on June 9
June 14, 2010 FSB Director Aleksandr Bortnikov announced on June 9 that the Ingush field commander known as Amir Magas (whose true identity remains unclear) was apprehended during a special operation earlier that day in Malgobek. The website of the Ingushetian chapter of the North Caucasus insurgency, hunafa.com, confirmed Magas's capture early on June 10. Bortnikov described Magas as "one of the leaders" of the North Caucasus insurgency, while a profile of him posted on June 11 on one of the insurgency websites dubbed him "a legend" and claimed that "his courage and daring were an inspiration to even the very best mujaheds." But a close look at Magas's role over the past decade suggests that both sides may be exaggerating the significance of his capture. The Capture of Magas May Prove to be More of a Challenge Than a Triumph for the Kremlin

On June 9, Russian news agencies broke the news about the capture in Malgobek, Ingushetia, of the military commander of the Caucasus Emirate, nicknamed Emir Magas (RIA Novosti, June 9). Such a high-ranking leader of the North Caucasus insurgency had not been apprehended since 2000, when two veterans of the first Chechen war, Salman Raduev and Turpal Atgeriev, were arrested by the Russian security services. The rebel Kavkaz Center website confirmed the capture of Emir Magas and expressed its high regard for him, calling him one of the key military leaders of the insurgency (www.kavkazcenter.com, June 9). FSB (Federal Security Service) Director Aleksandr Bortnikov reported the capture to President Dmitry Medvedev in person on the same day (www.kremlin.ru, June 9).

Russian forces have captured the alleged leader of a militant group in the Caucasus republic of Ingushetia, according to Aleksandr Bortnikov, the head of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB).
Bortnikov said the man, named Taziyev but also known by the name Magas, is wanted for a string of attacks in the Caucasus, including an assassination attempt that wounded Ingush leader Yunus-Bek Yevkurov in June 2009.
Russian news agencies quoted an FSB statement saying Taziyev is one of the leaders of a militant group called The Caucasus Emirate, which it said is accused of "organizing and participating in an armed rebellion with the goal of overthrowing the Russian regime."

| NAZRAN, May 4 (Itar-Tass) - According to specified information, eleven policemen got injuries as a result of an attack on a traffic police chekpoint in Ingushetia, ITAR-TASS learnt at the SKP (Investigation Committee to the Prosecutor's Office of the Russian Federation) investigation department for the Republic of Ingushetia on Tuesday. Earlier it was reported that seven policemen were injured. According to the department, on Monday, at about 23.30 Moscow time, an unidentified person fired from an antitank grenade launcher on the stationary traffic police checkpoint "Altai-16” at the crossing of the federal highway "Kavkaz” and the motor road "Nazran-Ekazhevo.” As a result, 11 officers of the Nazran Interior Department applied to hospital for medical aid, the checkpoint was damaged. On April 27, the Kavkazsky Uzel (Caucasian Knot) website reported that suspected militants from Ingushetia were now being tortured at Lefortovo, one of the Moscow’s top security prisons. The website indicated that as many as ten suspected militants had been transferred to the FSB headquarters in Moscow. According to the relatives of the detainees, in the process of vigorous interrogation, some of them had their ribs broken. At the same time, the interrogators severely restricted lawyers’ access to the suspects. Moreover, a source close to the investigators told the website that suffocation, beatings and electric shocks were applied repeatedly to extract confessions from the suspects. According to the source, the threat of sexual assault and its public exposure were also used to make the detainees to plead guilty (www.kavkaz-uzel.ru/articles/168150).
