Police in the Russian region of Ingushetia say they have killed three suspected militants in a shootout.

Ingushetia's Interior Ministry said the shooting started Thursday when police tried to arrest the suspected fighters at a house in the village of Sagopshi.

Ingushetia is next to Chechnya, which was devastated by years of fighting between Russian forces and separatist militants. Although Chechnya has been comparatively quiet in recent years, violence has spiked in Ingushetia.

The violence is believed to be both inspired by the Chechen insurgency and connected to local criminal groups.

RFE/RL: Ingush President Calls For End To Blood Feuds

Ingush President Yunus-Bek Yevkurov

NAZRAN, Russia -- Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, the president of the Russian republic of Ingushetia, has called on families involved in blood feuds to let the justice system punish the perpetrators of crimes, and not to take justice into their own hands.

There are at least 180 Ingush families that are entangled in various vendettas, or blood feuds, that often go back decades.

Blood feuds were officially banned during the 70 years of Communist rule in the Soviet Union, but the practice never died out completely.

Musa Pliyev, a lawyer and adviser to Yevkurov, told RFE/RL's North Caucasus Service that "the president faces an uphill battle, because of a weakening of public trust in the government."

Almost six months after the August 31 death in police custody of Magomed Yevloyev, owner of the independent website ingushetia.org (formerly ingushetiya.ru), an Interior Ministry official has gone public with damning new evidence concerning the circumstances of that killing.

On February 14, the website quoted lawyer Musa Pliyev, who represents Yevloyev's family, as saying that in testimony to the commission established by the Republic of Ingushetia prosecutor's office to probe the circumstances of the murder, Interior Ministry investigator Djanbolat Shankhoyev said that the Interior Ministry warrant on the basis of which Ingushetian police detained Yevloyev for questioning shortly before he died was in fact drafted and signed only after Yevloyev's death.

Shankhoyev has reportedly explained in detail what happened in a public statement ...
