President of Ingushetia: I'd have forgiven my attempters

aug 22 2009, 22:00

President of Ingushetia Yunus-Bek Evkurov said, at his first press conference after his return to the republic that would have been ready to pardon the terrorist who had attempted on him, should the latter have remained alive.

Mr Evkurov said: "Should the suicide bomber would have been alive, I'd have told him: go home to your father and mother. Everybody should have a chance; even rats are never cornered."

The ITAR-TASS reports that the President has also noted that the refugees from Chechnya, who stay in the territory of Ingushetia, should come back home to their republic and promised to work to this end.

Black Thursday in the North Caucasus

Publication: Eurasia Daily Monitor
August 20, 2009 09:44 AM

Last Thursday was Dagestan's deadliest day in recent years. While all three North Caucasus republics of Chechnya, Ingushetia and Dagestan reported deadly clashes between insurgents and police forces that day, the latter claimed most of the casualties.

In the Dagestani city of Buinaksk, at approximately 8:00 p.m. on the evening of August 13 a group of 10 to 15 militants, driving a car stolen earlier that day, opened fire on the police checkpoint on Lomonosov Street known as "Manasaul's Fork." After a brief shootout that left four policemen dead, the rebels took all their weapons, including Kalashnikov machine guns and handguns, walked to the nearby Olympus Sauna fitness center, and shot seven female employees (www.ingushetiyaru.org, August 13). The women's execution came after an unequivocal threat posted on Shariah Jamaat's website that claimed that sauna owners ran their business ...

The scene at a downtown police precinct in Nazran, Ingushetia

By: Mairbek Vatchagaev

According to independent sources, several additional Russian army units are headed to the special-operations zone where the insurgency in Ingushetia has mounted relentless strikes (www.ingushetia.ru, August 14). As these troops arrive in the area with five Grad missile launchers and several armored personnel carriers, it is clear that significant military action in the region is being prepared. In May, the leaders of Chechnya and Ingushetia agreed to conduct a joint military operation near the border that separates these two North Caucasus enclaves (in Sunzhensky district of Ingushetia and Achkhoi-Martanovsky district of Chechnya.)

On August 13 (Black Thursday) in the North Caucasus a total of eight policemen were killed and 16 wounded in Chechnya, Ingushetia and Dagestan. Civilian losses included eight dead and two wounded; five more, thought to be ...

The scene in Ingushetia in the wake of an August 17 attack

By: Valery Dzutsev

On August 17 unknown assailants drove a minivan loaded with explosives into the courtyard of the district police headquarters in Nazran, the principal city in Ingushetia, where it was detonated. Twenty-one policemen died in the attack and over one hundred people were wounded (ITAR-TASS, August 18). Nine people are listed as missing as the emergency services continue to search the rubble (RIA-Novosti, August 18). It is believed that the two perpetrators of the attack packed the vehicle with up to 400 kilograms of explosives, representing the largest bombing to date in Ingushetia (Interfax, August 18). Alternative sources from Ingushetia reported twenty-five fatalities, saying that fifteen of them were Russian policemen sent from the Russian regions and ten were Ingush (www.guraba.wordpress.com, August 18).
